new power books enough?

Hi other side,
I love my hvx. I'm running avid xpress pro with a pc and can't even get my clips into the system even after all the help I've had with the fine folks in this forum so I'm thinking of making the switch to fcp. Question . .. is the new power book pro5 powerful enough to edit hvx stuff, and will a guy with average intellect be able to learn it? (I understand it doesn't have a pcmcia slot)

Do yourself a favor and explore EDIUS Broadcast instead. If you're already on the PC, it'll be a lot cheaper (and better integrated with the HVX) to work with EDIUS.

If you need to learn FCP for business purposes, go ahead and make the leap to FCP. But if you're making the jump specifically because of the HVX, you really should check out EDIUS Broadcast first. You may still decide to go with FCP and that's fine, but at least give it a glance.

whats power book pro 5?

LOL.

Anyways, yes to answer your question:

The ne MACBOOK PRO can more than handle evry bit of HVX footage you can throw at it. Ive yet have to render anything in the timline to play it back at full rez

I just got back from an apple seminar where they were running a macbook pro and a ton of HD. Multicam/full rez rendering/ unlimited rt, you name it, that thing killed it and was running Shake and Soundtrack pro with interconnected projects at the same time.

Unreal.

Thanks guys, I didn't remember the exact name of the laptop, but I knew it was the fancy schmancy one that runs other operating systems as well. Barry I will look further into edius. I had the ultimate frustration, I bought a new acer laptop (21 inch screen, hd dvd player, 2gig ram, duo core, two hard drives) I loaded the p2 viewer and was very pleased it was able to play hd smoothly, but then PC reared it's ugly head. I loaded my avid xpress pro and couldn't get anything to work, I get a few fatal error messages, it doesn't recognize my audio card, It says every hvx file I try to open is incompatable. The thing is so heavy I might wind up using it as ballast in the kiel of my sailboat. Thanks again for all the advice.

Don't blame the laptop if it's just an Avid issue. First, read DC's post on how to import files into Avid. You can't just directly drag 'n' drop or Avid will think they're XDCAM files instead of P2 files. But if you import them properly you may find your system working again. Don't know about the fatal error messages etc; again, try the EDIUS demo on your system and you may just find that your problems were related to (and limited to) Avid.

Barry, I wasn't blaming the laptop for what I know are avid issues, but it was part of this trend of trouble when trying to use complex software on a pc. I have many different programs, Sonar, Cubase, Gigastudio, Kontact, Vegas and many other audio based programs and with most of them, I wind up spending some time with tech support. In most cases I understand the mac based programs don't have nearly as many issues.
I called Avid for support on getting the system installed two days after the 30 day grace period and they want 400 dollars just to talk to me. (btw it was the first and olnly time I called them)
The demo of canopus doesn't support hd, and I want to be real sure it will work befor I spent the 1000 for the program. (It is tempting though)
