New Panasonic HDC-Z10000 3d camera

I know, i did think it was a late april fool until i saw other sites reporting the same. You'd think they could think of a better name wouldn't you lol

This thing is going to sell for $3,500 at B&H, Currently the 3DA1 is selling for $16,000. It almost seams like this is the successor of the 3DA1 but costs infinite times less. Notable differences are 1080 60p and a faster lens over the 3DA1. I think the people who are buying the 3DA1 now will be seriously pissed off once they find out that the successor will be significantly less money.

Is their any reason why the 3DA1 still costs a fortune when this costs far less? Yes technology gets cheaper but you would think the 3DA1 would be heavily discounted by now because of the new model.

I know I can't be the only person confused by this.

OK, thinking it over, I don't think it has HD-SDI output like the 3DA1 but still, their should not be a price difference of that magnitude.

this is a product of the consumer division group so talk about undermining the pro division , right? thats a good sign.

also this has a different avchd 3d format while the 3DA1 is 2x 24mbps PH mode

That''s what I figured but it makes me wonder if Panasonic will update the 3DA1 soon. Still, I'm more interested in Panasonic releasing a successor to the HMC40. Since it has a faster lens, 1080 60p, nano surface coating, better processors and 3 manual rings. Having 3 rings in a body about the size of the HMC40 will be very convenient.

I'm not into 3d at all, but it is strange that this model has a consumer model designation, yet has xlr audio. Price wise it will compete with similar models introed by sony and jvc, all prosumer models.

If it is truly handled by the consumer line, I wonder if this could signal xlr on other models. I'd like an af-100 for 1/3 the price thank you very much. Gh3 with an audio box, xlr and headphone jack. One can hope

Does it being from the consumer division mean a professional should not use it? I'd like to get Barry Green's take on it. I was thinking of getting another HD camera, but am contemplating making the jump to 3D ( eventually everyone will have 3D tv's so I'm looking ahead). The price is in my range as opposed to the $16,000 price tag of the 3DA1. I shoot mostly legal videos (I see it doesn't have date and time stamp), but every once in a while I get weddings, mitzvahs, sports related, etc.

What should I do?

nope i meant internally on panasonic :)
im sure this is very viable on your work.

I'd say go for it. I mean with all the features it has including XLR inputs and 3 manual rings for example, you can tell Panasonic is aiming to sell this to professionals despite the fact that it's through the consumer division. I wonder if the reason Panasonic did that was to get the camera sold in more places. An extreme example of what I mean would be Best Buy.

For sure if this thing had an AG insignia in the beginning of the model name and being sold through the professional division, I bet this camera would have had a lot more publicity on this forum by now.

This cam, from what I gather, has 2 short comings:

It can only shoot on 1080, no 720 or SD. This is for sure.

No scene files. This I'm not certain. Only my guess by deduction because none of the marketing talks about scene files. Also, no variable frame rates.

I'm also a little baffled by the amateurish marketing on Panny's site:

http://panasonic.net/avc/camcorder/hd/z10000/feature2.html

There are 3 things wrong here. Are they trying to sell us shallow DOF here? Without actually saying shallow DOF? On a 3D camera? We all know a wide lens can't really produce that look without zooming close to all the way. Plus, shallow DOF is not very welcomed on 3D.

Also, none of the screen stills shown on this site is 3D.

And nothing here tells me which 3D modes this cam can shoot on. Side by side? Red / Cyan? Interleaved? This info is very important as YouTube has JUST enable 3D viewing options. Check out Felicia here and play around all the 3D options she offers us:

And as per YouTube, they prefer side by side. I guess it would be easier for them to present all these different options if you give them something easy to work with.

From my understanding, there are dual sensors outputting to dual SD slots. So you get left eye files on one SD card and right eye files on the other. It is then up to the editor to decide the 3D mode, i.e. side by side, top/bottom, etc... So it depends on the editing software, not the camera.

"From my understanding, there are dual sensors outputting to dual SD slots. So you get left eye files on one SD card and right eye files on the other."

This is sadly not correct. The camera records in AVCHD-2 format, which supports 3D at 24fps. The dual SD card slots can be used to either make a backup by recording the same data to both cards simultaneously, or to extend recording time by failing over from one card to the other when the first is full.

That said, there is a lot to like about this camera (zebra, waveform, xlr, etc). It looks a whole lot like the HMC-150, just with added 3D. I'm in.
