New Macbook Pro is slow

I just bought a new 17" Macbook Pro - no special configurations - just as-is out of the box, and I have to say, it seems pretty slow to me considering the Intel and the duo core and all that. At this point I think it's slower than my non-Intel G5. It also seems to have some issues with playback in Final Cut - drops frames in playback to the point where I had to tell it not to bother telling me it's happening. Am I expecting too much from a laptop?

Could be your external drive slowing things down. You are using an external right? Also, when you first startup a new mac, or plug in a new harddrive, Spotlight starts indexing your files which can slow things down for a while until it's done. Give it a few days. Fix your permissions. And max out your ram.

and the big one how much memory do you have? If it's under 2 gigs that is probably your problem.

My MacBook Pro was slow when I first got it too. It will speed up over the next week. make sure you have all the latest software updates.

Thanks for the tips. I have 2 gigs of RAM. I'm running FCP 5...something, Adademic Version (not at home to check it out right now), havent' been able to get Studio 2 yet. I am using an external Maxtor 750gb drive.

I'm sure getting Studio 2, then being able to install Leopard and getting more RAM will help. But it is interesting to me that my G5 is working much faster, even just in terms of starting up, than the new Intel duo core laptop. I'm finishing up a project and have reverted back to the G5 to get it done.

But I'll be taking the laptop to Copenhagen next week for three weeks and it will be the only computer at my disposal, so maybe it will find it's stride then.

Thanks again.

yeah it'll be slow for the first few days, make sure your software is up to date though. I went through two updates designed specifically for the intel macs and it made my computer run alot faster and smoother. You should restart your mac a couple of times as well. Also if you can upgrade to osx leopard, it is infinitely better than tiger, 64-bit top to bottom, makes editing that much easier imo
