New Mac Pro Configuration HELP

I'm an editor with a company that does a small amount of video. Right now we have a Late 2009 Mac Pro Dual Quad that's going to get replaced by a new mac pro. I'd love to be able to use the older mac as a video repository or backup machine with new hard drives.f

Also, what configuration for the new Mac Pro would you suggest? I need to come up with a list - I think I can get them to go for a six-core - but need help scoping out all the various peripheral stuff. I've always just popped hard drives into the bays - but obviously this isn't going to be the case with the new mac. Do I buy some kind of external enclosure? Interested in what setups others are pursuing...

Well the rule of thumb is always buy the fastest computer with the most RAM and most storage you can afford to purchase.

First thing I would ask them is what is my working budget for everything?

Then break it down into what fits and make decisions based on your needs.

If they only have money for a stripped down CPU without RAM, storage, monitor and such, then maybe a new decked out 27" iMac with new software and Thunderbolt storage might be a better option for you.
