New Led Fresnel Fixture from Kinotehnik - Practilite 602

Well the form factor is outstanding. Very slick looking product.
at 140w max it "should" be pretty bright.
the CRI seems decent although true light quality will have to be tested.

Price.....yeah, the big question.

Having experienced and bought remote phosphor technology, I don't ever want to use led lights again.

Ever.

Brilliant!
Could you recommend me some products, please?
I'm in the market for some new lights.

Currently I'm using LUPO LEDS Fresnel fixtures (both the 650 and the 1000), and several 1x1 F&V Ultracolor Z400S.
I find the latters very nice with skintones but totally suck in terms of output.

Thanks in advance

Matt,

Really interested in how you use your Maverick. Softbox? Bounce? Directly? Would a 2 Maverick 1 Photon set up be a decent interview kit?

I love my maverick.

Most times I use it as a key with the 90 degree louvers directly. I have to dim it quite a bit as it bright as heck.

I know some that will blow it through a 4x frame of 216 diffusion to soften it even more.

Here is a screen grab from a recent shoot with it as a key:

I would imagine that setup you described would be quite nice.

These lights do look very interesting. Love the small size. Kind of like the Fiilex P360 but with a varibale beam and at 140 watt power draw it should be considerably brighter.

Is the Cineo Foton 2 still available? I can't find it on Cineo's site and on Adorama it says the page for it is no longer available.

very nice lighting!

Sure,

I bought the Cineo Maverick:

Go to 3:25

The other one that looks really nice is the Area 48 Soft:

I just bought 3 Area 48 Soft Lights. The build quality is as great as the light quality. But people are still a bit biased because they remember the awful 1st gen Litepanels and their colour spike, something that is almost gone in remote phosphor. Also the panels make them act like a single source.
Erik Naso just posted a few images of the latest Westcott product but those lights have clearly visible LEDs when used on reflective surfaces....

The worst part with the Area 48s is having to chip out on all those damn accessories. But those Kinotek... Cri 90-93 :S that's not really that great anymore. Area 48 phosphor lights are coming in at 97 and their new tubes which will rival Kino Flo and Ice Light will come in at 98 and 99 in daylight and tungsten respectively.

I've done some research and can't find any info on whether this light has a cooling fan and, if so, how loud it is. Anyone know?

I've used the Fiilex P360, which has a fan that is quiet enough to be OK for most shooting situations. (Although it always makes me nervous.) I'd much rather see a fresnel with a heat sink and no fan at all.

I'm just starting to research LED lighting right now. (I'm still using incandescent)
I'm curious, is the standard to describe white LEDs as "LEDs" and remote phosphor LEDs as just "remote phosphor"?

Yeah, it's a little tricky given how many different implementations of LED there are now, but 'LED' generally describes the kind of multi-diode array we're all used to nowadays; and 'Remote Phosphor' describes a fixture using a remote phosphor panel.

The Kinotechnic sounds nice, the 15 degree to 80 degree spot/flood range is great. I wonder how the colour holds up? (Filex's lights have superb colour rendering and control, so anything on par with them is great).

Thanks Grug, that helps a bunch!

Looks like the white LEDs aren't used as much. I'm mainly finding RGB arrays and remote phosphors.

Decent Price and great focus range on this light. Maybe this will be my first LED Fresnel.

I think the companies who make and sell remote phosphor are always pretty good at specifying that the product is remote phosphor. Unfortunately the tech is still pretty new and not so available, so time will have to tell wether more designers will implement it or if plasma will take over instead. Ofcourse this also means that they are still rather expensive to acquire.

I love my Area 48s.... for some things. If you need a hard characterized light, they are not an option, neither if you need to light a wide shot, unless you are able to fork out what it costs to create an array of them.
However, for the kind of jobs I need them for they are excellent and fast to set up and litterally make no noise. I had the microphone mounted on a boom right next to the light when I did this dirty test video and it didn't pick up a sound from the light.

Alan Roberts just recently tested the Practilite 602 and if I'm remembering correctly the TLCI value for 3200K turned out around 95 and TLCI for 5600K was 92.
Those TLCI measurements will be published on EBU online database. And as the man himself said: "Anything above 90 will not need any colour adjustment."
BTW 15 point CRI measurements were about the same:

As for the luminous efficiency by now the absolute maximum light output is about 15000 lux, that is @ 4200K in spot mode (15 degrees).
