I have wanted a ladder dolly for some time and just to beat myself up I visit the CamTram site and check over at Abel Cine....just too pricey for my humble needs. But it is SUPERB!
Now there are a few others out there, one from the UK that Hague make and there is another on ebay that is less expensive by Merlin Video Systems. But both are just a little too ....well lets just say they seem.. well I have never tried them so I shouldn't comment.
Sliders are nice and I will probably build or buy a Zaza, however a ladder dolly gives you major movement when you need it and takes up very little space and weight. For me the latter is super important since I spend most of my time traveling and most of it by plane. Weight is a major concern. And you can always find a ladder to borrow or rent anywhere in the world.
Check out this one:

Nicely done with the same type of wheels on the more expensive CamTram but a scaled down version with an excellent looking build. I hope we get to see an evaluation somewhere, maybe even a comparison to the others.

Thanks Brian for posting this. We are a brand spanking new company. Just got the LLC papers in the mail the other day.

Like you, I ooh'd and aahh'd over the *coughs* the competitions' products. But to me they were either too wimpy or too expensive. So I decided to make one for myself. It had to be super strong, scalable for any camera, and work flawlessly. I worked with several machinists to custom build the parts.

I never thought I'd sell them, but when I carried my dolly onto its first set, the entire camera team was asking to buy it from me. So I called up the machinists again, and asked them what sort of bulk discounts they could get me if I ramped production. Amazingly enough, I'm able to sell them for less than the cost of the prototype.

I have an order of parts coming in for a batch of dollies this month. I have some arrangements with some well known cinematographers in the blogosphere to do a review of it when the new batch comes in. That should be coming in soon.

Welcome Boyd

Welcome Boyd

Boyd, good to see you dropped by dvxuser. It is always good to have a link to the guy who designed and builds the product he also sells and that you are a working DOP makes it all the more credible.
Look forward to the reviews and when I sell my second jib I will be sending you an order.
Brian
