New JuicedLink DT454 (basically CX231 & DN101 in one!)

Having just received my JuicedLink CX231 and DN101 (AND modifying the battery holder--a necessary step to using the DN101) I'm a little upset about this coming out suddenly.

I wanted to make this topic to bring it to everyone else's attention (anyone who was maybe looking to get these!)

But also, has anyone had any experience returning something like this to B&H? I'm assuming my having cut the battery compartment (like a said, you HAVE to for the DN101 to work) will cause a little bump in possibly returning it.

I sent an e-mail to Robert from JuicedLink, asking if I could get a replacement battery holder, otherwise I might have to eat $66 restocking fee (or even not being able to return it at all!)

Anyone have any advice for me?

wow, it looks great....hey quick favor, can you do a recording with a boom mic into the DN101 and the CX231 and upload it to youtube high def for me, so i can hear what it sounds like, i have looked everywhere, and wanted to hear the dn101 agc defeat...

10 seconds will be more than enough...

thanks in advance

Didn't see your post last night, otherwise I would have shot something for you. I'll see if I can do something quick over my lunch break (I'm at work right now). I'll keep you posted.

great, if you can do a mic, into the dn101 and then juicedlink un edited with video so i can see how it sounds i would be super grateful!

thanks man!

Would really like to hear your impressions of the DSLR's audio capabilities once you get past the XLR/phantom power/AGC hurtles.

Craven, I recorded some stuff over lunch, but I didn't have time to get it uploaded, so I'll do that once I'm off of work.

It's unedited for the most part. If you don't want me to do ANYTHING, I can do that, but the AGC always pushes the audio levels to JUST under peaking. While I usually peak around between -12/-6 when running the audio through the CX231/DN101. So I was intending to bring the AGC'd sound down to the same level.

Mark, as far as I can tell from some initial testing, the quality is pretty great. I haven't listened through my monitors yet, but I've used some headphones and in-ear monitors, and it sounds pretty great. The JuicedLink preamp has very low noise. The difference between the JuicedLink setup (with DN101) and the Canon's AGC is astounding. However, as far as I know, the 7D will only record 16-bit 48KHz audio. If you really need that extra quality, the Zoom H4N records 24-bit 96KHz audio. However, I have seen some online testing claiming that the JuicedLink preamps are a bit quieter than the H4N, so it may be a wash.

Each have their pros and cons. Quality Vs. Convenience, I suppose.

If you look on JuicedLink's site, Robert has quite a few videos regarding the quality of his device compared to BeachTek preamps and the built in AGC of the camera.

How does the JuicedLink compare to Beachtek's DXA-SLR?

I've never used the BeachTek adapter. I don't know how different it is from the DXA-2S, but Robert from JuicedLink has some comparison videos on YouTube. He does some tests with some equipment most of us would never own that shows the BeachTek not performing to their own claims:

Apparently they also have noisy preamps. At least noisier than the CX231, which is incredibly quiet. I'd watch some of Robert's videos, he obviously knows a lot more about it than I do.

But here is my sound test on Vimeo, I hope that's OK Craven:

I have the old combo as well. It works GREAT!

I have the old combo as well. It works GREAT!

I just bought the two items to make the combo as well. I bought the DN 101 new but the mixer used on eBay. On my 7D it works GREAT! I just did 3 interviews and they sound wonderful. The headphone monitoring is noisy though. Wish it was a little better.

I would like the new box as well. What to do? Anybody want the old one?

Luckily I bought mine from B&H and Robert from JuicedLink showed me where to get a replacement battery holder (because you had to modify it with the DN101).

I'm sending mine back to B&H tomorrow to get my money back and I'm playing an order for the DT454 as soon as it hits their site.

Something I just posted over at Cinema5D:

I know this has been discussed before, but I just shot part of my first narrative with the 7D and I used the BeachTek DXA-5D (that's the discontinued older version, they have released two more upgraded ones). I purchased it on Ebay for $280 and used it with my Rode VideoMic and I must say I was really really impressed. I was worried about whether I needed to boost with a preamp or not since this is a passive mixer but my audio was nice and strong. This combo is awesome as I can boom the VideoMic and run it to XLR cable with an adapter and not worry about picking up any hum or cable noise. The AGC killer in the DXA-5D worked great and I think I'm cool until Magic Lantern comes (if it ever does).

I know some tests have been made and are noisier than a Zoom but this thing is really very quiet noise-wise. Plus I am usually adding some other audio track, be it room atmosphere, nature sounds or whatever in addition to the dialog so I think this will work great. I'm just posting this because I think it's really a viable option to running dual audio and costs about the same. Plus if ML ever materializes this will make a great mixer.

And for run and gun it's a no-brainer. Juiced Link's version is claimed to be even quieter so I suggest people really check these options out as everyone seems to accept the Zoom configuration and overlooking these wonderful little boxes.

I'm hoping to get my hands on it next week. It's shipping to my local dealer in Toronto.

I'll post some tests then, if anyone can post tests beforehand, that would be awesome!
My fingers are crossed that I don't have to go double-system with the Zoom.

With the Juicedlink DT454, Does this mean no syncing in post? Abt to grab a 7d or 5dm2 and wanted to know.

Yes. You record audio straight to the camera.

I have a 7d and have been hoping a solution would rear its hiss-free head.

Looks like the new Juiced link (at least according to one member) is hiss free with clean sound.

Cheers , regarding audio , the first generation Juicedlink CX211 has an issue with the tripod mount when you use the 1/4 20 mounting thread it pushes up the circuit board causing the power supply not to work.. They have responded to this and have fixed the issue, i just got the new one as far as i can tell using it with the DN1O1, (a funky design for battery power patching the 9 v but it works) is it does indeed bypass the AGC effectively, no hiss, clean sound, i used it with a wireless G2 sennheiser.
Cheers

If true, I'm sold. Why worry about a Zoom recorder and a mixer? It's an all-in-one solution, with phantom power. Awesome!

This is my sound test of the CX231+DN101.

Nice test jshbckr. If the DT454 is anything close to that, I'm sold.

It's interesting that there hasn't been more buzz about the Juicedlink as an all-in-one solution. Until your test, I've been getting the impression it was OK for hobbyists, but not really broadcast ready.

From what I heard, it matches any audio I've recorded on a DVX, HVX, DSR-500, etc. I'd be interested to know if anyone disagrees, and why.

i just bought the zoom h4n, from samash, and they are pricematching abes of maine which is selling it for 269.99....

i run a recording studio for music production and the amps in the zoom are pretty damn good for its portability...and they are on par with consumer pre-amps...

i have compared it to all my mic pre-amps, and they match up to almost all of them....the pre-amps in the zoom h4n are on par with the m-audio octane pre-amps, or even the ones that come in the "ART" boxes and rackmounts....as long as you are using a great xlr cable and mic!

the built in mic's are actually damn good, and the zoom h4n has the best built in mic's of ALL pocket recorders!

it even has a noise gate, and all kinds of delays echo, its amazing....i would never record into a camera directly after hearing this and audio sync is easy!
