Thanks for the heads-up Kurth! I'll keep an eye out for it and save some bucks! :)

HX9 as B-cam to GH13

HX9 as B-cam to GH13

Interesting quote from user on Vimeo: (quote)

"My job consist in recording interviews to congressmen from my island, I usually use only the GH13 for my interview jobs, but I now incorporate the hx9v as a B-cam is my first video with both cameras and it worked perfectly as a B-cam, the reporter who ask the questions had a Nikon d90 and I borrowed it to use it as a C-cam, compared to hxv9 the nikon d90 was more noisier and both cameras were in automatic.

Sony HX9V:Slider Footage (Automatic)
Nikon D90:B&W Footage (Kit Lens)
GH13:Rest of the Footage (Canon FD 50MM 1.4)
Zoom H1
Available light

I will definetly incorporate the hx9v as a B-cam with my trusty Gh13 to my professional recordings."

In an earlier post, I had a video from a Vimeo user that wasn't thrilled with the HX9. He has changed his mind. :) (quote)

"Le Prieuré is owned by the commune of Saint-Philbert-sur-Risle in Normandy, France and is a splendid example of old Normandy "maison à colombages" along with the church as the central focal point of the village. It was damaged during the 2nd World War but it has been restored.

This is my second try using the Sony HX9V. My first short "Shadow of the forge" vimeo.com/26510029 was shot using MP4 25p.

This time I have used AVCHD 50p, then used Aunsoft "First Mate" to convert the .MTS files to H264 for editing in Final Cut Pro X. MTS files cannot be natively read in FCPX.

I am much happier with the result. The image is much cleaner; I cannot see any aliasing or moire in this footage. At the absolute long end of the zoom there is still some slight wobble even mounted on a tripod and 701 fluid head."

Picked one up today. Will be giving it a test this weekend as will be at a car show and drive. Then later will test it vs my HMC40, 7D and Sanyo H2000.

Dear friends.
Here is an attempt to work with the little Sony for BBC news

Together with my BBC correspondent Bethany Bell, we've decided to give the little Sony camera a try during a real short feature production.
The aim was not to astonish anyone with "VDSLR like" film look but to see how easy (or not) it is to work with it in the field.

Considering the fact that this camera is mostly automatic I am fairly happy with the end result. True, keeping the right exposure is almost impossible during "run&gun" (look at the piece to camera) but I must admit that focusing (or playing with depth of field) were easier then I've expected.

Other equipment used during this production day:

Sachtler DV8 SB tripod
Zacuto viewfinder
Tascam DR-100

Footage was converted to Cineform before editing on Adobe Premiere CS2
No CC was applied

If you have any questions please don't hesitate.

Thanks!

Johnnie

Looks great. I doubt anyone would guess that that was shot on a $350 camera.

Very nicely done! Great resolution, color, and dynamic range. (And the camerawork, editing and commentary were of course very professional).

Watching on Vimeo in HD, I found the motion a little jarring at times. I'm thinking this was because the camera was using high shutter speeds for some shots, but it could be in part a Vimeo thing. How does it look on a television?

Thanks for posting!!! I think this is a PRIME example of what is lurking in the story tellers pocket!!! Very nice!!!

OPHERBA,

Very nicely done! Amazing how this little cam is starting to change things. Thanks for sharing.

Very VERY nice, Johnnie. Recently got one myself -- it's ridiculous the quality you can get from a camera that fits in your pocket and only costs $350. And in the hands of someone who knows what he's doing, like yourself -- like I said, terrific.

Just wondering, was all the audio was done with the Tascam? And did you use a separate mic on that?

Excellent stuff!

Cory-Thank you!

GrahamH- You are right. Motion is a bit blurry when panning. I must be doing something wrong when converting to MP4 with "mpegstream clip". Will try different settings as soon as I have a bit of time.

HHL- A big thank you for keeping us all informed and sharing lots of the info and experience you are gathering with this camera. Indeed, as long as the light is sufficient, it is a nice tool to have in the pocket...

tcarretti- Thank you for taking the time watching the video and commenting!

GregJ- Audio was recorded into the Tascam DR-100 (don't like this recorder. Pre-Amps are very noisy). I used Sanken COS 11D lav microphone and the Sennheiser ew-100 G2 wireless kit.

Thank you!

Johnnie

Ah...geez....thanks OPHERBA. Sometimes I think I'm just annoying peeps with all this info. But thanks so much. At least you don't mind. :)

BATTERIES ARE VERY IMPORTANT ON THIS CAM. (It goes through them relatively quickly)

Wall charger (and car charger) for the HX9 - Shipped from US and only 5 bucks including shipping. I bought 2.

Wall Charger (and car charger) and a Battery - Shipped from the US and only 9 bucks for both. (This is the one that I SHOULD have bought) :)

Battery- shipped from the US 6.49 each. I bought 2.

OK,

I just ordered option #2. Hopefully for $9 it'll work! I know that sometimes these aftermarket batteries don't always work well/hold charge/show charge in camera, but hey.... for less than $10 bucks I'm willing to take a chance. Will let you all know how it works out.

I'll be waiting for feedback from both of you. It's definitely a pain to charge the batteries in camera.
