New inexpensive Sony, 1920x1080 60p • 24Mbps

Actually, us HX9V users should ask Sony for an firmware update request: Use a button during recording to lock focus or exposure.

I recommend NTSC for everyone so you can conform to be the slowest playback slow motion if you choose to conform and not convert.
Well, as it turns out - this isn't the recommended solution for my workflow (cineform intermediate).

For those working with Cineform : it is advisable by them (Cineform) to work with your original rate and not convert (you cannot do it with 60-->25).

So in my case, I'll have to wait for the 50P version.

Thank you All !!

Today must be my lucky day!

After finding the perfect rig for the HX9: http://www.cinema5d.com/news/?p=7068

I
found the perfect lens to compliment it: http://oliviatech.com/sigma-200-500mm-f2-8-is-26000-and-funny

xciting times I tell ya!! :)

Geez...tough crowd.

Anywho....You may remember me saying that there is some VOODOO going on in the auto features of this camera (in a good way...well sometimes)...and I said that in LOW LIGHT....it wasn't as bad as you would think. Here is an example of what I'm talking about....enjoy. (This is not my vid)

HX9 strikes again! Although this is a ROUGH example. I think this is a sign of things to come. ULTRA compact guerrilla reporting. I look forward to seeing more of this:

The Camera outputs 1080p over hdmi, depending on the settings, but i'm not sure if that's for video or pictures since i haven't got my camera yet. Does anyone know if you can record to an external hdmi recorder? http://esupport.sony.com/docs/dvimag/DSCHX9V_guide/eng/contents/08/03/08/08.html

The real question is if the HDMI video out signal is identical to the AVCHD signal or is a better signal with more information, preprocessing with the original sensor information. IF that is the case then this would be an amazing camera.

I'd LOVE to test that in fact. Got a recorder I can borrow? :)

If I had to guess though....I'd say that it's LESSER quality. To my eye, from memory, it seems that the quality improves (on screen) when you press record. So, I doubt that it's full (or superior) quality. I'd LOVE to be wrong here....but I have my doubts.

Cheers! :)

Ask and you shall receive! Looks like I was WRONG!! To the tune of 280Mbps!! Enjoy!! (PS...why can't a DSLR do this??) Although I can't imagine any gain from this....there you go: HX9V can record full quality from HDMI. DUH!!!!! :)

HHL, thank you.

The two files, HDMI out and AVCHD, are not identical. It looks like the over exposure that the HX9v suffers from is NOT on the HDMI out file (unless this is an sign of post processing). If this is real then is the HDMI signal really more raw signal with potentially more information. I have not had time to pixel peek this video. HHL you worked with them in their purest form, before Vimeo compression, is there a difference or is this just post proceessing?

EDIT: now I see that on your Vimeo page you indicate that you do not think that there is any real gain from this.
Question, I assume is this the recording signal or the prerecording signal with screen parameter display turned off?

FYI Philip I did not make this video. :) Contact the guy and ask his opinion. :)

Can anyone suggest a program for transcoding .mts files for final cut pro?
I usually transcode the .mov to prores with Mpeg streamclip, but it doesn't seem to recognise the .mts format.

Clipwrap will rewrap mts files to H264 very quickly. Use it for GH files, will try it today on HX9v files but do not anticipate any problems. $50

What can I do for wind noise? Has anybody tried a stick on wind screen on these cameras?

http://vimeo.com/26479329

I think literally applying some proper windgag material onto the microphone would be a good solution. You can buy the material, or cannibalise a small section out of one you already have. It will only need to be a few square centimetres. I would avoid using any fabric or foam that wasn't specifically designed for the job. I suggest carefully sticking some trimmed velcro (the hooked surface) around the microphone, and sewing narrow strips of the soft side velcro tape around the edges of the underside of the windgag material. That way you can remove the windgag when you need to by just peeling it off. It's basic improvisation but I don't see why it wouldn't work quite well.
