Yip I get what you saying and understand , these cameras would fill a small part of my work and my wife would be happy as i do not have to give her my DSLR to take family pictures or use my video camera to shoot video , it also justfys me buying a new toy with apllications for some work.,I am sure you also like new toys and there possiblties . I look at this camera as a improvement over my GoproHD .

With that attitude/approach....you are bound to "fall in love" with this cam. As long a people aren't expecting "a professional tool"...and understand it's "pocketable nature" and the category that puts it in.....it is an ABSOLUTE WONDER. This cam is an exceptional improvement over other cams in its category. It will CERTAINLY be topped/beaten (and I can't wait for that)....but for now. This cam is the PocketCinematography KING!!!! :)

with all that, I´d just prefer to carry my gh1 which now is even smaller . Kinda of defeats the purpose of compact cameras .

There are some really great shots in here. They're not ALL great...but some of them are IMHO. :) Enjoy!

I too have the Hx9v and sit and wonder what a year from now will come down the pike. If this cam got 20% better and had manual exposure, forget it. Toss in 24p, and 30p as well. But as it is now, it's quite amazing.

I am planning on picking one of these up to mount above or next to my T2i on my shoulder rig. It is the perfect safety shot camera, it may not match as well as I would like but the overall IQ seems strong and I can always use a nice safety shot for when I am shooting BTS or live event and trying to get overly creative or just flat-out miss focus.

On top of that I love slo-mo but prefer to shoot at 24 or 30 as it is more pleasing playback then 60p, occasionally I see moments I wish I shot at 60p to slow it down, this opens new doors in that aspect as well.

Another great and cost-effective tool to put in the bag, at $350, it can pay for itself in just 1 shoot if it saves a single shot or captures it slightly differently then I anticipated.

Can you choose the framerate of the Sony between 24p and 60p (NTSC) or 25p and 50p (PAL)? Or is it 60p, 50p by default

Hi all !

Maybe you can help me :

I am thinking of the HX9V (been reading and watching clips) but I have a problem : I can only lay my hand on a 60p version BUT I edit @ 25p.

Will I have problems with the HX9V @ 60p vs 25p (my 550d shoots @ 25p) or is it advisable to just wait for the native 25p.

I use Cineform Neo (v5) and Premiere.

Thanks

Kostas they are default for the country you live in , I have tried to set a demo model at a local shop which was Pal-i but could not set it to 60p. hope that helps.
AriG why is it a problem , you can order via ebay from HK or UK and get the right version 50p .

Nice! I think that this is doable. Although NOT a professional tool, I think that professionals will find ways (like this) to use the HX9, and its feature set, to their advantage. Post some footy when you can! :)

I understand that PAL model cannot shoot 60p. But is there a camera setting to shoot 25p (not slow motion), instead of 50p?

I haven't said it's a "problem".

I have just said that I can access (any buy) ATM - ONLY 60p although my editing environment is 25p based, so I asked if it should wait for the 50p HX9V or can I use 60p and later conform.

As far as I know, it only shoot NTSC60p ot PAL50p.

2 options for fitting in your workflow, conform to 24/25/30, and get slow motion. Or convert it to 24/25/30, this will make it playback at your native framerate, but the shutter speed with be faster so motion blur will be very different and sharper (less blur, not focus sharp) than traditional footage. Also, depending on the software you use to convert it, you might have further degradation or benefits in quality.

Benefits: you can use either the PAL or NTSC, since they both require some conversion to playback at standard framerates, you won't gain or lose a whole lot from using 1 or the other. I recommend NTSC for everyone so you can conform to be the slowest playback slow motion if you choose to conform and not convert.

Thanks! good to know, every review I had seen only talks about 60p, assumed it might come in a software update.

I can't wait for hardware to have the power to record without intraframe codecs on all devices... always wanting more. :D
