New inexpensive Sony, 1920x1080 60p • 24Mbps

Nothing special here. Just some VERY quick footy that I shot while driving with my family. I jumped out of the car and shot for less than 5 min. The purpose of this video was to test color correction with the HX9V. It seems like you're best off to shoot -2 on exposure, the bring it up in post. Also...it seems like there is a lot of room as far as adding effects that my make the image softer....the image is already so sharp, so you can add much more (than if you start with a soft image to start with). Anywho....I you'all get something out of this. Cheers!

NICE SHOTS!
I too have the little Hx9v and find it incredible!

Really very nice . the RG makes this footage.

I couldn't agree more. I will say this though....(the point of my posting this video really)....the HX9V grades VERY WELL. Now....I really should say that I haven't done much grading (and that may show)....but I was VERY surprised at how much I could push this footy around to get "a look"..... I'm very pleased indeed. Not necessarily with THIS look, but VERY excited about the idea of shooting properly exposed footage, from a camera that fits in my pocket, then grading the footy that "deserves" that extra time/dedication...and giving it some real "polish".

No question, I have a lot to learn, but I'm thrilled that this cam can produce footy that CAN produce a "look". :) Cheers!

IF you look at the clip of the 5d and hx9v , the Sony footage to me was sharper , and very little difference between the 2 ,this scraces me to think what the near future holds, just think Sony brings out a more manual over ride version.

But there's virtually no motion in those clips. There's more to a meaningful comparison of two cameras' video than just sharpness - in particular how do they handle various kinds of motion under various exposure conditions?

Graham Would agree I was just observasion, I would like to see how it(hx9v) handels fast moving objects , explosives , rockets flying , I do alot of defence work and so far the 550d works great and the results are very good and customers are happy , but the limitations for me is the time of 11min . Also all my MiniDV cameras are getting long in the tooth and I am looking for replacements both the hx9v and hx100 would work.

Hey GavinAbe and GrahamH. I can tell you that if you "over stress" this codec, it will produce "mud" like the GH1. I am CERTAIN of this because I have already done it. While shooting grass with a fair amount of wind, aimed into the sun (which was to produce lens flares), the colors were changing VERY quickly....the codec/footage produced "blocks" that are characteristic of "mud". It wasn't NEARLY as bad as the GH1 was (before the hack)....but in the right conditions it's there for sure. (FYI)

OK....this may be the future of HX9 as a PROFESSIONAL tool. (Maybe not too...) :)

For documentary peeps this should be freakin awesome....where you have the HX9 with auto focus, auto exposure to fall back on (and if you shoot with it for long, you'll learn to trust that it will get an "acceptable" shot)....this should buy the doc maker the freedom to get stuff in focus and such.) Anywho....

That looked GREAT! Even without the grade it looked great. Was that rack focus in the beginning done in post or with the camera? If it was in camera, could you share how you did it?

I've barely had a chance to shoot with mine, just some test shots around the house and office, but from the few things I have filmed it is definitely a great little camera, especially for the price.

There is a method to "rack"....you'll see that method earlier in this thread. The way I got that shot was by understanding the "auto" features of the camera. It will automatically switch over from 'macro' to wide focus if you just move at a reasonable pace. I had taken this same shot the day before and new how the camera would respond. Also note that everything here is handheld.

Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words. :)

I'm pretty sure I'm buying one of those. It looks perfect for amateur shorts, experimenting, web-videos etc. I was in love with Canon 7D but that was too expensive for just playing around with it. This is something I find very nice.

HHL, have you got a chance to test HX100V?

Congrats to you! I'm in LOVE for sure. I can now officially say that it is my favorite camera that I have ever owned. (GL1, DSR200A, D90, T2i, GH13, GF13, S95, FZ35, LX5...to name a few) My favorite thing about it is that I am shooting more now than ever. It may NOT be the BEST looking footy that I've ever shot....but it isn't the worst either. It's so simple and it lets me focus on other things that are more important....like, the story, and the actors, and color correction, and lighting...etc...etc. So this takes the "proper exposure and focus" out of my hands. I don't FULLY trust this camera YET...but each day, I trust it more. I just pulled off the freeway and stopped in a city that has a nice looking court house. I've been thinking about shooting it FOR YEARS....finally (30 min ago), I just pulled off and shot for 30min. It was sooo much FUN! And with a 24-384mm focal length (optical, none of that is digital) to play with, it got shots that it would have been *MUCH* more time consuming to get the same shots with a DSLR. Hopefully I'll post that shoot this upcoming weekend.

No...this camera doesn't fit my needs. I needed a cam that fits in my pocket. If I were going to lug the HX100V around, I'd just shoot with one of my DSLRs. It may fit your needs though...you never know! :) Good luck with your purchase! Enjoy! (and make sure to post some footy!) :)

Can someone please confirm to me if the HX100 has HDMI, Component and/or Composite video out while recording?
What about when rolling @ 1080 60P?

Thanks a lot

I cannot say for the HX100. However, it may be a hint that the HX9 DOES NOT have HDMI out WHILE recording. It does have "clean" out...but when you press record, the screen goes black/blank. I hope this helps.

HX100v has hdmi...shuts off while video recording. Just an HX9 with a longer lens, bigger body. No clean out...some stuff still displays after the display function is turned off.

HX9V low light sample here, confirms my given opinion. MUCH better than expected. NOT GOOD....but NOT GARBAGE either. TOTALLY workable in reasonable light.

HX100 has a manual ring focus if i remeber correctly but other that it is a hx9v under the hood, with the focusring you would be able to pull focus via a clamp style arm. I am not sure which camera to go as there is a quad copter with pan and tiltunit that is able to house the HX9V and shoot footage but the hx100 is just to heavy and the hx100 has the focus and and strong zoom for my other worker. and I cannot afford both. What to do hmmm :)

Pulling focus on a screen that small WOULD NOT BE FUN. :(
I don't think I'd dare try. Use the auto focus...it can be a bit frustrating, but I'd say "safer" than trying to pull focus. Remember that you can't monitor to a larger screen....so no dice there. There is a pretty cool focus lock feature that's pretty effective. All of that said....if you need those features, I'd really consider a different cam. If it's for pro usage, you're doomed to be disappointed. Get the right tool for the job. The HX9's strength is expressed being pulled out of your pants pocket. If you're shooting pro work that way.....uh......you're customers are BOUND to ask questions that will end in embarrassment. Not right or wrong....but there are PLENTY of cheap GH13/17s on the market. Less than 100usd more....for way more quality. (No HDMI monitoring on that one either... :( ) Anywho.....I hope you find what you are looking for... :) Cheers!
