New inexpensive Sony, 1920x1080 60p • 24Mbps

If Final Cut (and other NLEs) can't handle the 50p/60p footage from the HX9V in a straightforward way then I would consider getting the latest version of Sony Vegas - Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 suite - as it can handle these frame rates. For around $100 (£75 UK) that's got to be worth a look. I understand Sony Vegas is usually very stable. Not sure if there is a Mac version though, need to check that out.

I just edited a HX9V project at 1080/60p realtime in FCPX. SO you're wrong. I had realtime motion and I retimed in FCPX no problem at all. I just had to transcode with a different program. After transcoding, I just imported the clips and edited away.

What program did you use?
I can transcode with Premiere CS5.....Premiere CS5 will bring the footage in natively but is sucks balls for editing.

I'd also like to know what you used.

I used Aunsoft final mate ( http://www.aunsoft.com/ ) to convert the hx9v to prores Lt. Slow as hell to convert (60fps ya know). Saved the files to a folder. once transcoded, imported into FCPX and edited away. It edits really nice even on my Imac 27" I7.
The more I use FCPX, the more and more I LOVE IT! All the naysayers will eat their words after support from 3rd party apps start rolling in.

This is crazy - I don't understand why Apple cannot have all of this built in????

HX9V + Hypergonar Anamorphic lens
No color correction
Let me know what you think? For me....I think it's INSANE to get this quality from a compact camera.
Keep in mind (as always)....it looked better *BEFORE* YouTube compression. :)

I'd say he's closer to right. If you had to transcode to ProRes it's not "straightforward" HX9V footage anymore ...
Haven't we all had enough problems just editing AVCHD 30fps projects natively? 1080p/60 is quite the crunch. Hell, even CS5.5 has enough issues doing AVCHD "natively" at 720/60. I'll put my money down saying that apple will support AVCHD 1080/60p in a near future update. Until then, I'm fine with transcoding.

As the time I get with this camera expands, I am more and more impressed. Please don't take this as a "hey this is a professional tool" statement, because it's still my perspective that you should use the right tool for the job...

...anywho, I am specifically reporting here that the Auto Features on this camera can be VERY annoying....that said, I first experienced this (interesting) finding with the LX5....where I could not possibly equal the settings that the camera used its self. (LX5 is full manual control) So, for fun, I tried to equal the settings...and I failed miserably.

So....in low light, this camera blow chunks right? NO SO FAST....the auto features (that I was expecting to HATE), are doing to SERIOUS VOODOO....and I actually ~LIKE~ the look ***A LOT*** I"ll post some footy in the next couple of weeks, but I want to try to understand them first. In low light, with blown highlights, I'm seeing some interesting RANGE. MUCH more than I expected....MUCH more than I could CONFIGURE MYSELF.

I'll test this more and post findings....bottom line: I AM VERY IMPRESSED with the HX9V.

Due to the limits of manual features like Fstops etc , could you not use ND filters set like Cokin , I know this is not perfect but may be a solution.

HHL I really enjoyed that shorty, every day I come on to this thread and everyday there are more surprises I see, hopefully Sony see the value in this product and puts some more manual features in on the flim side.

I will be trying out the Cokin...we'll see how it goes. I'm not expecting great quality glass....but the sharpness of this cam could use some softening (for my taste). We'll see how it goes.

Thanks so much for the compliment. I'm glad you liked it.

I also hope that Sony will give the next version even MORE MOJO! If not...no prob, because I LOVE this one! :) Cheers!

why - hx9v has a built-in variable ND filter and this is awesome:thumbsup:

and anyway, when I see the unnecessary accessories, such as Z-finder, anamorphic lenses, etc., then you can immediately take a big cam:grin::beer:

Just ordered mine. It will probably be my go to camera for slowmotion and/or for "undercover" shooting. For fun I'd like to test it with anamorphic lenses too, and with steadicam. Please share your anamorphic setup HHL.

Will do. Holiday weekend this weekend...might be next. :( Sorry. I'll do what I can though.

Enjoy this in the mean time. :)

IF you look at the clip of the 5d and hx9v , the Sony footage to me was sharper , and very little difference between the 2 ,this scraces me to think what the near future holds, just think Sony brings out a more manual over ride version.

Yes. It is MUCH sharper. This may actually be something to try. On a DSLR shoot, do the wide setup shots on the HX9. This being one of the DSLR weaknesses. (Soft on the wides)

It would be fun if they gave this bad boy more manual control. I'm not sure how much I'd use it (prior post I mention this)....but what WOULD be very exciting is to see a larger sensor in this bad boy, and a faster lens too. :)

I shot some quick footy yesterday, just out on a Sunday drive with my family and happened to shoot real quick...maybe I'll post them later. :)
