New inexpensive Sony, 1920x1080 60p • 24Mbps

Nor does FCPX with natively with GH2 footage. I have both cameras and checked around. FCP X you still have to transcode GH2 footage and it does not work at all with HX9 footage.
I did buy Motion 5 - it is quite an upgrade from Motion 4 and worth $50.
After you install Motion do a software update and you will see more codecs to install.
I did that and Motion 5 does not recognize GH2, HX9 or .mxf P2 footage.
I am still using Premiere CS5 to edit footage with these cameras.

A couple of posts here mentioned no manual exposure control. So is it possible to fix the shutter speed (at say 1/60th) or will shutter speed waft around depending on light levels? If the latter, that would be a deal breaker for me considering this as a viable B-cam to my GH2.

I have not found any way to fix shutter or exposure. The only control is adjusting the EV up or down. If you want a B-cam for your GH2, get another GH2.
I only bought the Sony cam for family & casual use.

Couldn't agree more. Let's all make sure we get this straight. To look at this tool from a "professional" stand point, is DOOMED to end in disappointment. This is NOT a professional tool. You can see that the RESULTS ***can*** be SCARY CLOSE to professional....but that's when the GIVEN lighting and other factors are present (and maybe a little luck).

Maybe we'll figure some more "tricks" out....or maybe it will get a "Vitaly Hack" (wishful thinking there I'm sure)....but until then here's how I look at it and it's made me ONE HAPPY CAMPER:

Just yesterday I was in a golf tournament for my job. They were handing out the trophies and one of the organizers said: "DANG!! We forgot the camera!!" Does anyone have something better than a phone?? 2 minutes later I was shooting the trophy pics (they didn't need video). It was in the mid 90's and there is NO WAY I would expose my other cams to that sitting in my car. (I'm sure that it's not good for the HX9 either...but this is its purpose in my life.

In other words....in situations where you would have NO CAMERA AT ALL....the HX9 is "the bees knees", the "cat's pajamas".....if you have ANY OTHER "professional" cam, it PALES in comparison. I have NO DOUBT that in the "perfect HX9 conditions" people will make a double take. In other situations....it will make people PUKE. For a pocket cam....it is UNBEATABLE. Cheers!

The point is to have something significantly smaller and cheaper. I'm of course not looking for a professional tool, but control of shutter speed needs to be there, for me. YMMV.

LX5 has manual control. You can set the shutter on that cam. Smaller...cheaper, and it's the same family as the GH2. It's also better in low-light. It has a flaring problem though and is only 720P 30P. Flaring is easy to fix (ND filter works great). It just doesn't have the same "mojo" as the HX9. Great cam though. Might research that GrahamH (LX5). I own this cam too FYI.

I bought a 2nd GH2 body for $749. The HX9 was $350. The reason you would want the same camera is for matching in post. The GH2's cut together perfectly
with little muss or fuss. You could easily spend over $400 for a post session gone crazy. I use the HX9 for behind the scenes stuff.

In manual mode, I was able to change ISO, shutter, F-stop. Just press the button in the center of the dial on the back of the camera to select what you want to adjust. Then the dial on the back can be used as a wheel to adjust whatever the selected setting is. It was still limited, but offered more control. I am not sure it is better than one of the automatic modes, especially in my hands.

Yes, you can do that in the M-mode
only, it is useless
if they press the rec-button - and the auto mode is back (iAUTO or SCN)

you can manual by + / - EV intervene
hera a go:

I probably worked harder than I should have....but I finally got a chance to shoot some footy. I strapped a MONSTER anamorphic lens on this bad boy and shot some.....this is a COMPLETE contradiction of what I would ~normally~ be using this for....but I couldn't resist. :) I'm having problems uploading right now....but just an FYI, it will be out there shortly. I hope you all enjoy it. (When it finally SHOWS UP!!!)

If Final Cut (and other NLEs) can't handle the 50p/60p footage from the HX9V in a straightforward way then I would consider getting the latest version of Sony Vegas - Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 suite - as it can handle these frame rates. For around $100 (£75 UK) that's got to be worth a look. I understand Sony Vegas is usually very stable. Not sure if there is a Mac version though, need to check that out.
