New images from D80

I'm brand new to this so any feedback is appreciated. I took these of my family a couple hours ago. This is on my new D80 50mm 1.8. I used a black backdrop and natural light from my window. I finally let go of using the auto button and actually used the M function, so I'm proud of my baby steps. As you can see I played with my new Capture NX software to try out various skin tones on my wife as well.

The black and white is really cool. The others lack some sharpness I would say.
 
Yeah, that was the tricky part I'm still woking on. For instance, getting that damn cat of mine in focus without losing the sharpness in my wife's face was difficult. Thoughts? And in the first shot I compromised her focus to sharpen my sons face, as his told the 'larger' story. Hmm.
 
A 50mm 1.8 is very soft wide open. Around f/4.0 it gets to its max sharpness level. Unless I am in extreme low light I never shoot my f1.4 wide open... I prefer to increase my ISO.
