New iMacs

I'm thinking of buying this system for editing as well. What should I expect to pay, all in all, assuming I buy the hard drive and ram from the cheapest outlet (1 tera hard drive - 3 or 4 gig ram) for a 24" system or a 20" system?

The only thing I'm concerned about is using external hard drives. As one person mentioned above, their external hard drives were basically worthless for editing. But apparently that was for an earlier system. Can the current system handle external hard drive editing? Will be editing in HD.

External Editing is fine...I have editied on a Powerbook G4 (Firewire 800/400) without problem with 720p HDV footage, the iMac should handle the transfer no prob.

Ive edited on USB 2.0 drives , (several actually , clips in the same timeline were spread across 3 different hard drives) and it has gone without a problem, though its NOT how you are supposed to do it, in a select group of circumstances and short on time i have done this and it was perfectly fine though noisy all those drives kicking away. lol

You will be just fine, especially with a FW800 drive instead of USB 2.0 or FW400.

I have one of the older 24" imacs (before they went all dark and sexy) and it rocks.
Intel 2.16 Core Duo w/ 2gigs of ram and the 7600GT graphics card run FCP, Motion, DVDSP, and the rest of the studio perfectly. Even HD footage is no match for it.
I imagine one of the newer ones would be even better.

i have been wondering if an imac will even cut it for HD.... what do you think the most bottom line setup to be able to edit multiple angles of HD in final cut

i currently have a 2gh power pc g5 with an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card and it runs super doing as many as seven angle mixes in the multi clip function.... HD on the other hand just playing back a single file is troublesome it can't even come close to handling it... i am scared to know how much its going to cost me to switch over

shouldnt cost much wilsonedits, actually how much ram you have in that G5? Is it a dual or a single?

Did they make those in single processors?

Anyways, the diff between the 20" and the 24" arent that big any more, so you shouldnt have to spend more than 1500 bucks on the system plus RAM if you dont need 24" screen

I think those new imacs are nice. i also like the new keyboard, first thought it was kinda odd, but it s really nice working on it...

Now those specs are perfectly fine for fcp, the only thing is that motion will need some serious graphic power, so 256 is fine, but could be better. if you re just editing: no problem at all... i DO recommend to put in as much ram as possible, your system will take about a third of that ram away....

SO, my turn to brag :)

my setup:
- Mac Pro Quad 2.66
- 5gigs ram
- 512mb graphix
- 1st drive: 250gb standard for application and system
- 2nd drive: 500gb exclusively (!!) for media and render files (this is an absolute MUST! can be external, but never run the app and your media files from the same drive.. HUGE performance issues)
- 2x 23'' Cinema Displays
- Jog Shuttle (dunno the name)
- 2 additional drives (i think 2 300gigs)

And the best part: I just bought FINAL CUT STUDIO 2 yesterday!!! Man i love this thing :) motion s amazing, soundtrack incredible, and i have no clue whatsoever on how to use color :)

So - imacs, huh? (got carried away) They re great, they look good. Make sure you get as much ram as you can afford, get a 2nd drive and you re ready to rumble...

I'm thinking of checking into the new iMAC's also. I will be shooting HD on my Panasonic HVX200 using the P2 card. I will be using FCP to edit.

1) Will there be problems using the P2 card?

2) how much difference is there between the 2.4ghz core 2 duo and the 2.8ghz core 2 duo extreme?

Thanks.

To answer your first question, of course you have to get an external P2 loading device to import your stuff to your Mac. Other from that, there should be no problems.

1) No problems, but youll have to connect the cam to the computer of course, or the P2 store.

2) about a 14.2% gain in performance.
