New here, just saying hello!

Hello everyone,

Just found this users group a bit ago and had to join. I had been pretty active over at 2-pop a year or more ago (and elsewhere) but until just recently haven't been visiting much.

Just finishing up a bunch of life's struggles which altered my plans for the past year or more and am now getting back to where I was hoping to be about year ago.

Next week I'll finally be buying my DVX100, but now its got a 'A' on the end ;D. It sounds like it may have been good thing in some ways that I had to wait ::)

So, got prices from EVS, AbelCine, B&H, Promax, and Zotz. Any others I should be looking at? So far the are all within my budget and pretty close so which is best???

Finally got to the Colorado/Wyoming area (was near Orlando), and now I have the time to do some nature videography as well as some work for my son's business. Have a few other ideas also cooking so once I get my new toy, I'm all set.

I can see I'm going to hang around here more then elsewhere, as this seems to have a really nice group of people, alot I recognize from some of the other forums I on.

Anyways, just wanted to say hello for the most part.

Re: New here, just saying hello!

Rodger, nice to see you here, I remember you form over at 2-pop. (I am Zoomforce over at 2pop)

Anyways, welcome, and EVS is a sponsor here and good thing your a member as they will beat most other prices if you email cody and tell them your a DVXUser.com member.

Re: New here, just saying hello!

Hey there zoomforce,

Yeah, I remember you too. So, I see you are the owner of this little establishment, huh? ;) Guess I could say you got a winner, but I suppose you already know that ;D

Actually, you recommended EVS to me back then as I recall. Must be good people to still be at the top of the list.

I send a quote request out to Cody and we'll see.

Thanks for the welcome and recommendation.

Re: New here, just saying hello!

EVS is a good group. I'm about to spend about $2500 over there real quick. B&H is my other favorite supplier, but EVS is competitive, friendly, an official DVXUSER.com sponsor, and (since I'm near california) a lot closer (so quicker shipping times).

Re: New here, just saying hello!

Thanks everyone for the welcomes and recommendations.

I am also going to buy some kind of moderately inexpensive miniDV deck.  So far I think I like the JVC SR-VS30U as it will also allow me to output to s-VHS as well as standard VHS.  I foresee most of my work going to DVD, but there will no doubt still be a need for VHS or s-VHS so I kind of like the option of doing both with one deck.

Any other suggestions up to maybe $1500 or so?

Thanks again.

Re: New here, just saying hello!

Some say JVC decks don't capture the 2:3:3:2 pulldown cadence, but I use the SR-VS30U, and I've had no problems whatsoever with it.

Another advantage to that deck is the ability to capture from VHS and SVHS, and even from live TV.

Are you saying it will convert analog input source to DV? If so this is a little to cheap as good analog to digital converters are over $400 alone. I use a Canapus ADVC-100 now so I don't really need that extra feature, but I'm curious...

Re: New here, just saying hello!

..well, really anyone with the dvx can convert analog to digital dv just by running it into the cams coax rca inputs and out via firewire into the nle. .. but i dont neccessarily like to pull the cam out for stuff like that .. i use the matrox rtx1oo for that stuff

Re: New here, just saying hello!

You can play out VHS, SVHS, or live TV over the FireWire into the computer for capture. Whether or not this is according-to-Hoyle DV is a question for the uber-techies. I will tell you that they're captured as AVI just like mini-DV would be, and you can edit the captured clips like any other clips, so it works.

However, while you can use the min-DV deck as any other VTR and have it be controlled by your capture software, the software will not control the VHS side.

Re: New here, just saying hello!

...once its in digital format , as long as your blacks and whites are set ath the appropriate levels for broadcast, it doesnt really matter as far as the levels of the captured material. if your going back out to analog, you need to have the IRE set to 7.5 though.

Re: New here, just saying hello!

iamloser- Your right. I was just curious that this fairly inexpensive 2 recorder deck would have a built-in AD/DA converter. If I would have thought about it more then a second or 2, I guess it only makes since to convert both ways as the AD/DA chip is already there.

Jubal28 - Pretty sure this is the one I'll get. Seems to do everything I will need for now and since I'm also going to get a new stand alone DVD recorder, I like the less then $1000 price tag.

Thank for the help everyone.

Re: New here, just saying hello!

AD/DA convertors only cost less than $25 for the complete circuit.. its pretty cheap now adays, and most DV camcorders even in the $500 range have them built in. Realistically, a deck should cost less than a camcorder because they are just cameras without lens, CCD or screen. All cheap DV decks from JVC and Panasonic use the same transport system as are in thier camcorders.

Pansonic makes a wierd little portable deck that uses the same transport as the DVX100, and it even can run off the DVX100 batteries.. all for about $1000.

Personally though, I have heard many people that use the DV/VHS deck from JVC and havn't had any problems. IF you are using it less than an hour a day on average you should be fine.

I took it that Jarred just meant its not as *tough* as a pro unit would be.

If I get it, it will most likely be used somewhat sporadically as I cannot devote full time to this semi-hobby/future profession, at least not right away. And if/when I do have more to edit on a regular bases, I'm sure money will be coming in from my efforts, so again not a big problem -- Just buy better then ;D

Re: New here, just saying hello!

Hi Rodger from a fellow Coloradan. I remember your animated graphic from the 2-pop forum.

We're starting to use the DVX100 now, and love it. Hopefully we'll meet some day and can sit down for coffee or a beer (or three) and rave about our favorite camera.

Re: New here, just saying hello!

Some of the decks are indeed basically the same as camcorders without lenses (i.e., the Sony clamshell decks, and the Panasonic). They appear to share the same transport mechanisms as camcorders.

I don't know about those combo decks, never saw one in person so I don't know what type of tape transport they use.

Better decks have much more rugged tape transport systems. I got a bottom-of-the-line JVC BR-DV3000 deck, about $1400 from EVS or B&H. It takes large or small tapes, plays back NTSC or PAL, DV or DVCAM (but no LP mode), and can shuttle the tape at speeds up to 20x normal. Infinitely preferable than using a camera as a deck. But, it was also $1400 vs. maybe $300 for a cheap camera.

What are you using the DVX100 for?

I plan on doing high quality videography (24PA for 24p DVD mostly) in a few different areas.  Some will be for and related to my son's business and some will be unrelated.

I've been attempting to purchase this camera for at least a year, but something has always been standing in my way.  Needless to say, I am very excited to FINALLY get things squared away to the point where I am going to order the DVX100A and some support stuff later this week. ;D

Sending out request for quotes now.
