New Guy -- Basic Question re: 24P

Ok, I'm brand new to this, so sorry for the 1st grade level question....

When shooting footage in F5 or F6 on the DVX (24P), is the footage automatically converted to 60i? -- in which case, I would want to capture that footage in Premiere as at 29.97 frame rate, right?

Also, in the DVX user book, it says, "only use F6 scene setting if your NLE program supports advanced conversion." well, does Premiere Pro do this, or should I stick to F5?

thanks

Premiere Pro 1.5 supports 24pa...is that the version you have?

By the way, the whole point of this forum is to ask questions so please don't apologize...we are all here to help each other.

Re: New Guy -- Basic Question 24P

I have Premiere Pro
(not 1.5).

I'll get 1.5 if I need it, but I'll pretty much be shooting weddings here and there, and to keep things simple, I'll probably just stick to the standard 60i video frame rate.

With the version of Premiere Pro I have, it looks like there are only 4 real project presets: 25fps PAL (wide and standard) and 29.97fps NTSC (wide and standard).

I'll obviously be using NTSC every time, and since Premiere only gives me a 29.97fps option, so what happens to my footage that was shot with the DVX in 24P? Does Premiere handle the 24 to 29.97 conversion, or is that already taken care of inside the DVX when the footage is shot?

Here is what I understand. Please correct me if I am wrong:
I shoot with the Scene 5 Preset (24Pn). Footage is captured at a true frame rate of 24P. I set up my Premiere project as NTSC 29.97. I capture footage at 24P. I put that 24P footage into the timeline and when I render it, Premiere converts it to 29.97. Although it is now 29.97, the footage still has the "24fps film look." I should then export the project as a normal 60i movie so it will play in my old school DVD player.

If I have Premiere Pro v.1, I should not shoot anything in the DVX's Scene 6 Preset (24Pa). Is that right?

Thanks again for helping get me started with all this.

Re: New Guy -- Basic Question 24P

Not exactly. The pulldown is added in-camera which means that the footage you are capturing is 29.97 with pulldown added. You can open up a regular Premiere timeline and edit as normal. You will still have the 24p look, nothing is changed there but you will not be able to edit in a true 24p environment, which is no big deal for the majority of users.

Premiere 1.5 allows you to edit on a 24fps timeline so it strips out the frames added during the pulldown process, giving you clean, whole frames to work with.

When you watch a movie on TV that was shot on film, you are seeing it running at 29.97 with pulldown added but it still looks like film.

Is this making sense to you?
