new gear...first impressions

finally, after almost a year of dreaming, i have invested in a camera, tripod, camera bag, and some more editing gear.

here are my first impression:

DVX100a - very cool camera! have only checked out some very basic stuff; menus, scene settings, etc.

let's see...you can have both the lcd display and viewfinder on at the same time, and the viewfinder can be b&w! also it has a diopter ajustment for mis-alligned eyes (like mine.)

i expected it to be lighter...it's pretty substantial in size and weight

my senn (long) shotgun mike fits on fine with no vingetting at zoom out, even though the nose of the mike sticks out a good six inches beyong the camera hood.

haven't fiddled with much else yet.

camera bag...portabrace DVO-2U - great bag!! it's big enough to hold the camera with the shotgun attached! and i'm told it will also hold the camera with a matte box and follow focus attached. i wouldn't be surprised. the bag is VERY well made with plenty of room, pockets, etc. and a LEATHER handle and strap...not a bad deal at a little over $250.

got a dvx 5400 battery...well made...i'm sure it will do the trick.

of course got barry green's book...very thorough...we all owe him a world of thanks.

still waiting on tripod. bogen 503, 351mvb2k...there's 19 others backordered at evs as of this writing. should be a great tripod when i get it. also waiting on a lacie 500gb firewire drive.

editing stuff...just picked up another 23" apple cinema display. so two displays now for FCP. should be all set. Just need a dv deck -- i'll probably get the jvc dv/svh (the most affordable) in about a month.

thanks to all of you, especially jarred and barry, for all your information and help.

special thanks to rush at evs for the great deal he gave me. 3 day shipping at regualr price -- can't beat it.

sounds like your pretty stoked! Good for you man.I have the same setup as you as far as bag and shotgun goes. I thought for sure the mic would show up in my shots, nice surprise that it didnt. Now go shoot something!

Congratulations, Carl! Looking foward to seeing some of your work. Think maybe you can lend me one of those 23" displays sometime in the future?

You're welcome sir! I appreciate your business. Golly I hope we get those tripods soon! There are so many people waiting on them.

cflamm, how much did the mic cost and did you buy any accessories for it? have you tested the sound quality? what's your take on it.

any info would be great, i'm debating over mic's right now. to many option it's hard to make a decision.

Rasquachemedia ,

it's the senn 66 long shotgun -- great mike. have used them for years at the tv station i work at. they're workhorses. as far as the price, evs has the 66/k6 pwr unit combo for $479. talk to rush - he can probably knock a few dollars off.

oz,

i'm hoping these monitors will be keepers...the 23" displays have had problems with yellow and magenta tinting in the past. it's supposed to be taken care of with the new production models after july 2005. i'll keep you posted. the workmanship on these monitors, however is stunning (if you've never seen one other than a picture.)
