SO it seems the new g5 is out, i was about to buy the 2.7 g5 a few months ago and im glad i waited but can anyone tell me why this is better? and is anything else going to be release or is this it?? it is a 2.5 the other one was a 2.7? there does not seem to be that much difference in price, just wondering how come since its supposed to be faster?

The power of two 2.5 processors on one chip times 2...hmmm much faster than a dual 2.7. Looks promising but expect dual core Intel chips in a PowerMac by May or June that will blow this thing away!!

Supposedly the Intel chips are going to debut in the low end machines, and the PowerMac family will be the last to convert to Intel chips. I think it is likely that when the Intel processors hit PowerMac, they will also be dual core designs.

i would be willing to bet on AT LEAST tri-core...intel already has multi-core processors for servers.

Yeah, as I've heard it laptops and/or low-end will get it first (lord knows the PowerBooks need it bad), and PowerMacs last. IIRC, Jobs said this was going to be spread out of two years or so. So, let's say at MWSF (January) 2007 Intel PowerMacs are announced. Which means they'll probably ship by March. And do you really trust a Rev A of such a drastically changed computer (I wouldn't)? So let's say you wait for the Rev B's which will probably be announced around Aug 2007 and ship in Sept or Oct.

So, IMO, it's going to be about 2 years before a viable, Intel-based PowerMac hits the streets. Plenty of time to get your money's worth out of a newly announced G5 PM.

My Intel runs a dual XP/OSX right now.
Of course it's not perfect and I'd rather buy an original MAC, but it will have to be priced close to the same configuration on a regular PC from Dell and it's likes.
I'm pretty sure Apple will cave on the hardware/software issue and release OS X for X86 (Intel or AMD) machines eventually.

They still think hardware will make them more money, but I think selling lots and lots of OS will end up being better, now that so many people know Apple first hand from the iPods they are more likely to try the Mac, if the price is right

It figures.

I just get the scratch for a dual 2.7, and am just getting it up and running, when this happens.

Oh, well. In another 2-3 years I'll go for one of those Intel machines when the bugs are worked out...

Two weeks ago I bought a G5 Dual 2.7 machine and still could have taken it back last night, but didn't. After finding out that the new dual dual G5 2.5 did away with PCI slots, having to buy a new decklink card, 4 gig of DDR2 ram, pay an extra $300 and get hit with a $300 restocking fee, I decided to keep to keep the G5 2.7.
I think I made the right decision. But the new one sure looks like a screamer.

intel won't be in powermacs for over a year.....dolby...don't sweat it. The dual 2.7 is a fine machine. Of course the quad is tempting....but our duals will work great for the next couple years.

Aside from rendering, if yuo have a good chunk of ram, is there really going to be a significant advantage with 4 processors? I know that half of the software programs for osx can't even use 2, and they don't need to... any thoughts if this extra $700 (from dual to quad) will actually increase a fcp workflow that much?

Yes, it definitely will increase your FCP workflow. Apple is saying about 70% speed increases on rendering from the dual 2.7 - FCP definitely can work w/ the 4 cores.
