New FX cam?

I was just at BH and one of the employees at the Sony booth mentioned there might be a new fx announcement on Nov 8. E-nd and ibis? Just bought a fx3 but that puts me within the 30 day window…

Interesting! This, hopefully, will be the new FX60 I’ve been predicting that Sony might launch. Super35 sensor, eVND but in a FX6 style body.

From memory, my FS5 was announced in Nov 2015 and just such a cam would be an excellent companion to my FX30. If Sony have found a way to have eVND and IBIS then that would be the icing on the cake.

That's probably a pretty good guess. Sales are so good on the FX3/FX6 I doubt Sony would put out a FF update to them right now.

I think Nov 8 will see the A9iii. It's the Creator's event, where Sony announced the a9ii 4 years ago.

Of course, they could also announce an FX body same day

Sony registered 3 pro cameras recently. One is almost guaranteed to be the a9iii. One is probably an FX line camera based on where it's being manufactured. The third one is a mystery. Maybe an a7siv. Sony always releases new cameras between 2-4 months after registering them, and they were registered in September.

Of course, if they release an S35 FX camera with eND, one would expect them to release a FF variant later and make you regret your purchase if that's what you really wanted...

Chasing new tech is a losing game, especially if you're getting work with your current gear, but I am tempted to keep the FX3 I just bough boxed up (use my fx6 for the time being) and see what Sony announces...

Not a bad idea. I think it's one thing that's useful about rumors sites in terms of planning purchase timing.

That being said, the rumors have said there would be a new 85 GM for like 2 years and as a result I never bought the original 85 GM, which I now regret. And now I'm still in the same boat...waiting for the replacement...which should be soon

They also said the a7siii would be released about a year and a half before it was, although that wasn't as regrettable for me

I think ideally you buy the gear right when it comes out. Of course, that can be a hard call to make if something else might come out soon. A7siii was an easy call for me bc the a7sii was very popular so I knew it would have recognition by anyone who cared. I'm planning on buying a new camera to add to the arsenal but Im going to wait until all 3 new registries are announced to make a decision

Just checked my website blog. I was close, but for the record, my FS5 was launched at IBC on 8th September 2015. (I don’t like incorrect info to linger on the forum).

I think if an FX cam (such as an FX60) did have both eVND (which I love) and IBIS (super useful in smaller/lighter cams) then we would all hope they roll out the feature (eventually). Not too long until we find out!

We’ve all done the do I wait/upgrade game!

Not all “upgrades” in Sony’s line come as total improvements though!

I still can’t understand why Sony removed the one on-body XLR input and the rear EVF (albeit only adequate, but useful to have) which the FS5 has from the “improved” FX6 body design.

Judging by the FX3/FX30 iteration (retaining some simple to rectify faults such as single tripod mount etc.), I doubt these features would return to an FX60…but I live in hope!

I wouldn't necessarily expect improvements in body design. I mean, it could happen. But I think the general emphasis is on things like improvements in autofocus, increases in resolution or framerate, etc

To be honest, if the a7siii just had variable shutter so I could deal with location LED flicker I would just buy another one

Sony has made leaps and bounds in their CS, but it would be nice if they took it even further and tried to emulate the Alexa like BM.

I agree Abe, over the years I have come around to see that in the tech world, if you want to upgrade anything, the sooner the better. That way you maximize your time benefitting from the improvements. I too have "waited" and found that when I did finally upgrade, my time with the better tool was much shorter until the even better tool appeared on the market. It all depends on if you are generating revenue with the purchase. If you are, then let it rip.

I too continue to be impressed with the A7sIII. More than I expected.

Yeah, the lack of variable shutter is the only real problem for me.

I would be happy to get improvements in autofocus, especially in terms of sticking to the person it's tracking or on the object I touch to track, not to mention a more feathered behavior when it settles into place although I doubt we will get that.

The useless quad bayer sensor design is annoying because it's inherently noisier than if it were just the native resolution to begin with, so that could be improved.

It would be cool to have a 4K aps-c crop but I don't necessarily need that on the same camera. I'd be happy to have a separate camera, like I do now, which can do that crop for telephoto reach and macro magnification. I think I'd prefer that they keep the same low resolution on the a7s line but we'll see what they do.

And of course, eND would be awesome but I don't even mention it because I think it's a pipe dream. But hey Sony prove me wrong!

Specifically, relating to IBIS and eVND in small body cameras. In the past I've seen Sony Techies talk on videos (possible at one or two of the big video trade shows or cam launches) about there not being enough room in smaller body cams to include both IBIS and eVND...which makes sense. But as a former scientist and engineer myself, I know that things that seem impossible one day become possible with either incremental or occasional "leap-frog" developments...So yes, never give up on eVND inbuilt in a small, mirrorless body, maybe even (if we are super lucky) in combination with IBIS in a larger FX6/FX60 type body.

Right, well they have it in the Burano... so you're saying they need space to the side to move the eND assembly out of the way? Because the space between the mount and the sensor is fixed regardless of the body size

I was sort of thinking it was a price thing? Like maybe they would want to add $1k to the retail price if they put in eND and it's just such a big fraction of the total price of a mirrorless camera that it would end up tanking sales. 10 years ago it seemed that every monitor with an HDMI-only version and a version that included SDI had a fixed price difference between the 2. Like you had to add $500 to get SDI. Not because of the manufacturing costs, just the sales price tier.

Then again, the FX6 is about the same price as a high-end mirrorless camera. Although it doesn't have IBIS so...

By the way, where did you work as an engineer?

I thought they had the technology to send an electronic signal to control the darkness of a ND filter without physically moving it. Heck even variable nd filter just need to be rotated. Even though they can alter the color the camera could compensate for it like the do for lens distortion. Seems like camera manufactures aren't that innovative. If they can roll out basically the same camera then that's what they'll do.

Btw, FX3 would be the most logical camera they would update given it's the oldest and they have released firmware updates mean they'd prefer to release a new model instead.

Nothing in electronics. I'm a PhD Chemical Engineer and worked for DuPont in the States/all over the World. Got tired of the constant travelling (especially when our children appeared) so left that in 2008 and then started my video company as a lifestyle business - rather than just "retire". Still doing it after 15 years :2vrolijk_08:

I don't know specifics about camera engineering/development (some on here will) but I do know exactly how cutting edge technical development works in large corporations, especially when trying to deliver some of the desires/promises made by the marketing types! :Drogar-Scared(DBG):

I think the fx6 was released before the fx3?
