New follow focus.

Say someone was working on a new (cheap) follow focus, and to stay out of the way of the matte box, the PUSH AUTO button was now hard to get to, would that be a problem? Remember that you are pulling focus manually.

Re: New follow focus.

I personally do not see that as a major issue as that I only use the AUTO functions when filming my 4 year old son...

That being said...

I think overall a design should not hinder access to any functions. ie. Think of another solution that does not inhibit someone from accessing any button or function on the camera.

Kind of like adding something to a car and making it a pain to access Cruise Control?

BTW - That was funny when I saw the CENTURY Logo and the word CHEAP in the same sentence. Kind of a contradiction in terms isn't it? :P

Re: New follow focus.

I dont think The auto switch on my camera has actually ever been moved off of manual... so I dont think it would be a problem.

Re: New follow focus.

Well, obviously it would be better if it didn't block it, especially that "focus assist" now exists in 24P. Wouldn't be a dealbreaker, just depends on how "affordable" a cheap follow focus would be.

Re: New follow focus.

so wierd... I bought the new panasonic digital still and every day the similarities to the dvx astound me... 72mm threads on an Leica lens.. and the same focus switch... I mean.. you could actually swap the switches.. and the digital still camera even has focus assist the same way as the new DVX. Funny stuff.

Re: New follow focus.

If you don't mind asking those "say" questions, maybe you can ask another question like...

"say that someone is about to release an anamorphic adapter, what would be the best timing to do so? This month or the next?

Re: New follow focus.

That's a fair question. I still have not recievied the prototype glass for our 16:9 adapter. There has been cosmetic issues with the optical house that is fabricating the lenses. The very slight blemishes do not effect performance, but when you pay $2k for a lens, you do not want to see small scratches or bubbles. A optical engineer called this "the Hasselblad effect".
I am hoping to see the glass before NAB (so we can show the proto there).

Re: New follow focus.

Whoa...

I didn't really expect any answer. I've sent an e-mail to Century Optics about this matter without avail -- which is really strange to me since everyone in the world knows that Century Optics is making such an adatper.

My problem, however, is timing, rather than price (although cheaper the better). NAB is still a month or two away, if I'm not mistaken, and I would like to see this thing released in the next month or two...

I've talked to a reputable salesman who claimed to have talked to you guys, and mentioned that Century Optics would release it in a month or two, but I took it with a grain of salt.

Bigger problem for me is how this adapter will fit into my DVX. Can I attach circular filters on it? If so, what size? What kind of matte boxes can I attach to it? etc etc.

Maybe someone can explain to me what kind of circular filters get attached to other anamorphic adapters for other cameras. I guess my fear is that I'd go out and spend $200 on a 72mm filter and have to replace it when the Century Optics Anamorphic adapter comes out :(

Re: New follow focus.

A cheap follow focus control? Go ahead and block the Push Auto button--I never use the thing.

Re: New follow focus.

..what!? you mean theres an AUTO button on this cam..? oh wait .. yeah.. its got one . i had just forgotton about it because its absolutely worthless. silly me.

Re: New follow focus.

hey Ken,

If you're fielding opinions I would love to see a F.F wheel with front faced scale plate like your standard larger rigs by Arri. (unlike Chrosziel's DV unit with top scale plate.) I've never used the Chrosziel DV unit but I'd imagine with that top surrounding scale it must be difficult to see marks sometimes.

Thanks.

Re: New follow focus.

Is there any chance this follow focus may be remotely controlled? I need a way to attach either a wireless or cabled remote to a hand grip on a DVRig Pro.

Anybody got something for this, I'm looking.

Hey Elvis,

Thanks for the link for the remote focus, reading and looking now.

I just ordered the DVRig Pro and will have it in a couple of days I suppose. I think I'll like it if its fast enough. This is for shooting our flying R/C wings and it's just about impossible to keep in-frame unless way back. I'm working on an idea to allow me to "spot" our wings using a laser refracting sight that will allow full view through and around the site. Pretty sure this will keep me on target, but still going to be tough to work zoom and focus.

I may actually have to use an assistant with a field monitor pulling focus and zoom, don't know yet.

Really, I need to get this all figured out within the next couple of months as we plan to go on the road to air shows to do shoots. Hope I'm heading down the right path, guess well see.

Re: New follow focus.

Actually, you can go to our website an have a look around. Some older videos there shot with my Sony Hi8 and even a single new video of the Mini SpeedWing 250 shot with the DVX100A. We need to do way better then this video, as we will be producing DVD's, so I'm really hustling to find some answers on how to do this as good as possible (within reason of course).

Here's our website:
