New focusing monitor

Is this an HD monitor, and is it being used with your FX1? How did you connect the monitor to the camera? I tried connecting my similar Sony SD monitor to an HVX via SVideo, and found that there was not enough resolution for accurate focusing of HD. I ended up using an 8" IKAN LCD monitor connected with the component cable.

Its not HD its SD, and Its connected to the video in BNC connector on the back of the monitor.

Its pretty good for focusing, its a shame its not small like the LCD, but it has a very clean image on it...

So far, I think these little 9' CRT broadcast monitors blow the pants off any of the low cost LCD solutions out there for focusing and judging exposure.

But you cannot judge HD focus on a PAL/NTSC monitor accurately, the resolution is way too low. Nice try but useless for focus, at least for me. Composite passes a maximum of about half of the resolution of HD cameras.

I miss using my little 8" Sony CRTs, they are still sitting in the closet in their little PortaBraces, unused and unloved for the past few years.

They're still really nice as client monitors but I agree on focusing. It just looks like it eats up more time than you want on set.

In my experiments, the small monitor seems to do pretty well for focusing. The image is very sharp...

My sony 9" has component and SDI in and judging sharpness is easy - even with the HVX in HD...
The late Sony SD CRTs were pretty high-res, not HD of course, but not close enough to what most 7" LCD used around here offer...

I'm a big fan of these CRT monitors. So much better than LCD for judging color, contrast and brightness. What model is it?

If you can focus 720 or 1080 lines accurately with around 300 to view, I am impressed. I have tried it and could never make it work. Perhaps the shallow depth of field using an adapter is actually helping you here, I never tried it with an adapter. But without an adapter with 1/3" chips, it is very difficult to tell when you have sharp focus, even with a real HD monitor.

Good luck,

Dan

im thinking about buying a small dvd portable player, but dont know if will do the job...(upside down of course) or maybe a flat pc monitor...hmmm but not so portable at the end of the day...
