New Flipping Adapter

I have been tru this before. Built one up with a mirror and roof prism from an slr camera. Works fine, except for its size. You really need to make the setup 2 to 3 times bigger in order to get a decent size image off the ground glass.

For experimenting you should use prism from Medium format camera instead of SLR prism.. they are made for a frame size 6 x 6 cm ( or more ) and they can be bought separately..

I got mine ( Zenza Bronica's ) from eBay for 1€ + 10€ post..

It works fine with small camera like Panasonic gs250 .. but I didn't had chance to try it with any bigger camera..

I assume that those ( medium format ) that have 45-degree angle are brighter..than you should mount camcorder similar as at movietube..

Kyle.. I am not shure that prism would suck less light than mirror.. Actually you can measure how long is the material path thrue glass .. and if you take your thinking at the atom level.. at glass there is much more molecules for light to pass thrue than thrue the air..

The ony benefit from the prisms would be lack of dust that with time catches to the mirror design.. next one is: you don't need to tune mirror positions.. but the bad things are price and weight..

It is sad story that bionocules don't need bigger prisms..

Cheers to all,

david

Hmm, never thought about using medium format prisms. But you are right, the weight itself will be an issue. My current adaptor with a small camcorder is already quite heavy. So to have heavy prisms on it would not help. One thing I like about using the prism setup as you rightly say is that you don't have to do too much alignment as you would with mirrors. As for the dust issue, as long as you seal the setup properly, dust shouldn't be an issue.

I'm positive a rod system will need to be used. It will be a little heavier. I'll try to post a new design tomorrow. Thanks for the interest, guys.

These were my thoughts too, but cheaper SLR cameras use mirrors instead of prisms and the image is much dimmer because of this. Seems like one of the optical engineers I spoke to said prisms were brighter as well, but I don't remember exactly.

This is a little more crude than the last but maybe you get the picture. I hope this makes sense.

I have a question.

Will it actually have that bend in it, or will it be straight-looking like most other adapters?

One other thing to mention, It will be a vibe unit from Daniel Schweinert with an EE-A screen, no acid etched groundglass. It seems the further you get into developement of these things, the more compromises have to be made. It's getting a little frustrating. I wont be able to deliver the same adapter as in the original description, but my hope is that it will be better than what is out there now. Barry Green said in a recent post that we should demand an adapter with a right-side-up workflow, I'm paraphrasing, and that inspired me to pick this thing back up. I have ordered most of the parts to put together a prototype. I hope all comes together.

Update: The prototype is near complete. The prisms came in yesterday, still need a good achromat in 58mm. Any advice?

Really? I had heard that it becomes basically useless at night. And I could see why, especially with an HVX's sensitivity. I am actually looking into experimenting with first surface mirrors. I don't have a Letus FE, so I don't know what kind of mirrors are in it, first or second surface, but I suspect they are arranged like a Porro-Abbe prism. The reason I am looking at experiementing with FS mirrors is because I am getting a haze from the setup I have right now. The image looks a little milky, almost like a phase shift, but Porro prisms, to my understanding, don't have that effect because there is no roof section. I am a little puzzled. Other than that it seems to work fine the way it is. I get an erect image, ironicly it's a little disorienting.

I dont like the image the Letus produces very much. I suspect it's the way the GG is manufactured that gives images that underwater, pro-mist look. Every image I have seen from the Letus has that characteristic. The Nuetral bokeh that comes from the screen I am using looks really good. It's not furry like the M2, but very neutral and natural looking, which is what I consider "good" bokeh. A lot of it has to do with the lens though. I am using a Nikon 50mm F/1.8 Series E. It's a sweet lens for bokeh rendition.

Wayne, we talked before about the achromats you have now. I would like to take this adapter to the commercial level. You didn't seem too keen to do business then because of that fact. Has your position changed?

EDIT: I just looked at my prisms. They weren't clean. I cleaned them and the picture is fine, no haze.

Cinefield35 is COMPLETE!!!

Cinefield35 is COMPLETE!!!

I'm done! This is it-

Basic unit pricing will be about 3 grand. That's before lens mount, achromat, eh... "rod" support.

3 Grand! with or without the cardboard?

For three grand the unit would also want to double the res of the HVX and produce images on a par with the new HVX 2/3 chip big brother!

Unless that price is in yen I'm not sure there would be that many takers unless the footage is s t u n n i n g.

sorry I get it. apols. LOL

But it could have been earnest! I've seen stranger posts -

Have you any footage - would love to have a look.

Should have some in the next couple of weeks. I need to get some more parts. The adapter itself is built minus the vibe unit. The screen is static right now. The flipping unit is built. Works beautifully. I need to test it with the achromat, which I don't have yet. It will be a Century Precision Optics +7, I think. I will test it before I say for sure.
