New Film Scorer Needs Help

On the track is indeed a good resource. As for "composer" forums...I agree. There are hardly any good ones out there. I have been to forums where people have huge bashing ceremonies to any film composers who step in the door, saying they're not real composers, blah blah blah, it's a huge debate that carries right through to music schools as well.

I'm thankful to many of the DVXusers who let me score their short films starting in '06 for sci fest etc. Some of the people I worked with then I am still working with and it has led to many more opportunities! Really the best way to learn to score a film is listen to film scores 24/7 (With and without picture) and score lots and lots of short films. The more you do the better you get, and of course you learn when to hold back, how to approach each scene, etc.

Do not worry about "ruining" peoples short films when you're first starting out. I can count the amount of short films I've seen that have really good music (without a good composer like the ones here at DVX ) in one hand, so many people settle for second rate royalty free music and don't know what they are missing out on!

Please get in touch if you have any questions or problems on your film score quest, while I am still no John williams, I have been doing it for a little while now and would gladly help you out if I can.

Good luck to you!

Just a thought I had for fun and practice... Try rescoring a movie like Wizard of Oz, and put it on CD. Then you sink it up with the start of that movie, and turn the volume off on the TV... like with Pink Floyd' Dark Side Of The Moon.
