New FigRig Project

I'm working on a figrig. I didn't really think I'd try to make one of these but what the hay. Besides, sometimes traveling with all your gear is just too much when it's just you filming so I think a figrig is a good idea for traveling gear. I also just made a much smaller version of my large dolly for the same reason.

I went into Home Depot for random household things and ended up seeing some curved PVC piping for electrical work. I was able to stand there and connect 4 pieces in a figrig type shape with no effort. So I got 4 pieces. They were $1.53 each. I got some dangerous sounding PVC cement too for it. hahaha

Here are photos of the PVC put together (I would still have to work on a platform design).

Ok so then I saw a couple of posts about figrigs made out of steering wheels and bicycle rims and I remembered I had in my garage two wheelchair parts (the rim things that you use your hands to push yourself in a wheelchair). So I got them out of there and they are perfect for a figrig. But I'm stuck right now on how to attach the platform for the camera mount. These things are cool too because they have 6 metal things sticking out one side (the parts that attach to the wheelchair), that I can hang stuff on. I've included photos below.

So my challenges right now is figuring out a platform for both rigs.

Stay tunned.

The hand rail for the wheelchair might be something to expand upon.

You know how studio microphones have vibration dampening suspension? (pic attached)

Maybe you could 'suspend' the camera within the circuit of the rail?

Tensioning lengths of bunji chord in a crisscross pattern (using the posts already in place on the rail) could hold the camera & platform in place, and provide vibration isolation.

I don't mean you'd have to have all the angled stuff like the Neumann rig pictured- but just a crisscross from the six posts you've got in place.

Just an idea.

[Ran into this cool site when I googled "mic suspension": http://www.instructables.com/id/Microphone-Suspension-Mount/ -check it out, some cool stuff there.]

Excellent Idea!! I have a microphone with a suspension mount like that (I have a small in-home recording studio). I can look at it to figure out what I'm trying to do. Thanks for the idea. :)
