New editing system - Your opinion

I just contacted Dell for an estimate (editing system for Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium). The salesman at Dell suggested the XPS 720 H2C Desktop http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_720h2c?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1

It looks like you can't upgrade that system very easily??? What would you suggest. We are now working on Corporate videos and shortly we will sub contract for interviews and filming images that will support those interviews. We plan on documentaries in a few years (traveling Europe etc...)

Don't want to rely on a salesman to make my decision. Want the system to be good for at least 3-4 years. Maybe I should go for the laptop right away? How much more for a comparable laptop?

Thank you very much for your opinions.

That's a lot of horsepower. You can construct your own for a lot cheaper, though. Dells tend to be overpriced.

If you're interested, PM me, and I'll give the list of system components I just ordered, which are properly in tune with each other, for much, much less.

hey good quality is costly make sure you get what you want and cover your workflow needs,
capture cards are half the cost 1500 and up for decent quality!!
just find your needs based on your capture of choice!!
and look into certified systems that your workflow recomends
cs3 recomends about 6 difrent partners for there support
triple check the recomeneded partners section of your workflow needs!!
a salesman will thro any old thing to get your doh! just spend wisely!
dont get a super computer thats uncompatible to your workflow!!
make sure its updateble if neccesary, chipsets are buggy for certain cards!!
my sujestion is to build around your capture cards needs!!! or external capture needs

and storage and audio and vid card!!
id just get a turn key nle if you can afford it!!!!best support and reliablity for professional use , i buit my own solve my own riddles but a turn key has mad support options like replacemnt on site or even onsite technical for emeidiate needs!!
good luck
if money is an issue build it yourself!!! save if possable!!

We just got some nice Dell T7400's. They have dual Quad Core Xeon processors and 8 slots for Memory. This is in the Dell business section. They are big computers so don't plan on moving them around much and with a price of around 3 grand a piece they are expensive.

Hi Passerelle,
That is a gaming system. Overclocked CPU, factory or not, is not done for reliability reasons. 500Gb in a RAID 0 means you have 250Gb to play with. RAID 0 is another word for mirroring. 4Gb of RAM is good. Windows cannot use any more anyway. Actually, it will use about 3.5Gb. Try to get "downgraded" to XP and you'll gain about 40% speed. That's an average by independent labs, but not running NLEs, so your mileage may vary.

Having said all that; I'm using an XPS myself. But a 420. I bought a 1Tb drive for $179.- at Best Buy and added it. And I think total cost was around $1,500. That included a quad core Intel chip, and a few things I could do without, like BlueTooth keyboard and mouse. But it'll leave you with money for the most important thing of the whole system: a big, honkin' monitor. I got a 24" widescreen and wish I'd gotten a 27" instead.
