New Digital Chips - Less Power, More Dynamic Range

I don't know, any article that starts out "two dudes" did anything, and I've lost hope right away. 10 times the dynamic range huh, so, we can basically see the detail of the sun and be looking at the deepest darkest cave on earth at the same time? Somebody needs to get their facts straight.

Actually that's just a summary of the 'real' article. Take a look at the full length article. It sounds like these guys have done some really revolutionary stuff. Makes me wonder what might happen in the next year or two with video cameras...

Pretty cool, but the bigger question is how long until this technology trickles down? Will probably take at least a few years for the bargain basement filmmakers to reap the benefits. :(

Yah, I think that this technology won't be of use until 5 years from now. I mean, look at Hybrid and Hydrogen fueled cars. They made those like 20 years ago and they are just now coming out with it.

Issac, forget 'trickle down'.... this stuff isn't even being used yet.
And as it is I think they're only dealing with still camera use right now (probably can't do 30fps).
Either way, I thought it was cool.

It reminds me of something Rodriguez is fond of saying in his interviews when talking about the 'limitations' of shooting on video. "HD looks as bad as it's ever going to look right now"

This may be a long way off...but the thing is it's inevitable.

I think the bigger surprise would be to hear engineers all in agreement saying, "No, that's it. We've reached the end. There is no better technology on the horizon. Game over.".

Now, that would be shocking! :)

Very interesting. Their first prototype will be a VIDEO camera, not still. As it says in the article, the prototype will determine if they get real world benefits equal to their projections.

Well hot damn...guess I should read the articles I post links to more closely.
Hmmmm...now if only these guys were tied in with the RED camera.
:)

4K with 10 times the dynamic range anyone?
