New Desktop - Whaddayathink?

careful with the windows 64.. it wont let you use 32bit hardware drivers, so alot of things (printers etc) wont work with it.

the dual core 3800 amd is the best option right now because it can overclock pretty well, and it is almost affordable.

Windows 64 can use 32 bit drivers... Any 32 bit processes are labeled in the Task Manager as *32bit next to the process. When it says 64 bit it has to be able to use 32 bit because not enough companys have 64 bit applications and thats how windows compromised. The main thing that Windows XP 64 bit does is allow people to utilize 64 bit if they have applications that support it. Pretty Much straight from Maximum PC's review on Windows XP 64 bit.

*Correction*
You were right, 32 bit drivers, NO, 32 bit Applications, YES. My Bad I misunderstood what they said.

haven't seen that review. must check it out.

32-bit processes are fine, but xp64 *requires* 64-bit drivers for all hardware. jarred's right, though, there are a lot of printers that don't have 64-bit drivers written for them. but afaik, that's the only issue people are having. otherwise i hear it's very much more responsive than xp pro.

i haven't upgraded to xp 64-bit but when i do i'm going to partition my main drive and set up a dual boot system. no worries then.

I heard that the new Windows Vista is supposed to work really well with Media and What not as well so as soon as it is released then that may be an option, mind you it is a resource pig.

Well;

I put the specs of Dell, Fry's and Micro Center Pentium D systems together (spreadsheet available if anyone is interested).., and not suprisingly the difference between each is not that great. But the overall winner is Micro Center (slightly better specs - bigger HD).

So, here's my new system: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=191180

This thing is flying! I played 3 separte DVD files at the same time, and jumped back and forth between all the screens.... no lag, delay or skips! ( I know this is not a real test - but if you saw my old system - you'd be cheering too)

I went with the factory 1 Gig on RAM, was thinking of jumping to 2 Gigs.., but so far, it's cruising along real well... will wait and see at rendering time, if that extra 1 Gig stick is needed.

NEXT STEP: Choose a GOOD (not top of line - but not bargain basement) set of 19" TFT's to go with the sys. Will get 2 of 'em, I saw one at Fry's by Hyundai for $309, and it was surprisingly pretty good, and also a Samsung at Micr Center for $379. Will do some research today. Anyone got recommendations? Good deals?

-peace!
