New computer, no firewire

The laptop I want to get doesn't have firewire, ExpressCard, cardbus nor PCMCIA. It does have an eSATA thing but can I use that for capturing?

I have a HV30(miniDV) camera which can output through firewire and HDMI.

So how do I get the video(in perfect HD-quality) to the computer?

Is there any firewire/HDMI through eSATA methods? or something through usb?

Any ideas are welcomed(except for choosing another computer).

Well I am not too sure about eSATA. I thought it was only for hard drives and disk drives. If there's nothing that will work with that, you could try a USB A/V converter with HDMI. What is your budget? There are some professional ones that will give you really good quality. Most of them have a firewire port too.

I guess if your plan to buy a laptop that doesn't meet some of your needs is firm, as you say in your post, you could always rent computer time at a local service bureau to capture your miniDV or HDV tapes to a portable hard drive. Why you would buy a laptop knowing it doesn't meet your needs is beyond me, though, I must admit.

A laptop without all those features does seem rather cut down, I've not come across many laptops with power to run pro software that doesn't have the ins and outs. Unless you really MUST buy this one, I'd really think about it?

purchase a laptop that has firewire would be my recommendation... or at least with an expresscard slot or something you can use to easily have firewire.

It would be more helpful if you would tell us what brand and model of laptop you are buying. It's quite impossible for any modern laptop manufacturer exclude a firewire port unless you are buying those netbooks.

All the Dell laptops I bought, they won't mention anything about any firewire port. But they always come with a 1394-A firewire port.

This might do what you need:

I'd definitely look into it further. The speeds advertised are a little slow for some reason.

Also, why do you want to get this laptop when it doesn't meet some of your basic needs? You'll be shelling out at least another $50 to get an adapter. That money could be better spent on a laptop with built-in Firewire or ExpressCard slot.

Acer Aspire 5739G-734G50Mn

On the retailers sites it says no expresscard or firewire. I can't find the exact model on Acers site.

Thanks, the thing is that everything else on the computer is really good for the price I found, a real steal it seems compared to other computers i looked at.

But I have realized I will need another soundcard too so I will choose another computer.

Thanks all.
