New CitiDISK CFR

Hi there,

this looks interesting, is slightly cheaper than the Focus FS-H200 and looks to me, like the important features are there.

Don't have any experience in working with firestores though, it's rather that I'm considering buying something like this, with a Hpx170 (w/o big P2 cards, to cut costs).
I'd be happy to get some other people's opinion on that topic - of course I've read, that these older Firestores weren't the most reliable solution in the world; but I figured, this could be better?

The early Firestores may have had some quirks, but according to the posts here, the first generation Citidisks barely worked at all. I would look at some reviews on this product before making a decision. It does look interesting, though--I intend to look for some reviews myself.

But you still have to buy the media (cards), swap them around, offload them and all the clumsy work flow you have with P2 cards. The Firestore takes you thru a whole day of shooting (on a typical set) without the need of a second person with a laptop just for offloading.

I read this, Grant, thanks for the info; it sounds like they use SSD but actually the media's cheaper than what I'd expect - do you know for sure about this topic?
@ Frank: yes I know; P2 workflow is annoying and it costs more... But then you're flexible. If you only shoot for half an hour, you can leave the external at home, but most of all, that way I can try the external out for myself. Maybe I find the connection over Firewire too risky for a lot of projects; or is this a non-issue?

FD,

Yes, there are links to the VC102 announcements and some retailers are listing them for sale. I own one of the iDVR adapters and one drive, and the hardware is real nice quality. I am going to buy a battery so I'll have a stand alone field offload setup.

If you had a VC102 for your cam, and the iDVR adapter at your edit station, buy a few drives, it would be a pretty good recording - storage system. The other benefit is the edit ready data. We'll see if it catches on, there are more new choices every day. But for the price of a couple of 64gig P2 cards, you could have a real good long form recorder, 250 or 500GB.
