New cams! 1080p60! Panasonic HDC-HS700 & HDC-TM700

It looks like the new consumer cams will record H264 at 28Mbps.

Perhaps we will see new AVCCAM camcorders soon, with enhanced capabilities (beyond AVCHD) for shooting 1080p60 at 28Mbps soon?

Since when does the consumer need 1080p60. Sony's Cinealtas (the most overpriced cameras on the market) don't even do that!

"...and a setting that automatically snaps a still image during video recording when an on-camera subject smiles."

This feature is hilarious to me.

At first that sounded surprising but them again, Panasonic now fully owns Sanyo, the first company to put 1080 60p in consumer HD camcorders. The other surprising feature is the f/1.5 lens.

For the ultimate picture quality, 1080 60p should be a welcome addition. I mean, it's even good for full 1920x1080 slow motion. That's much better than slow motion in 1280x720.

It's going to be very interesting seeing what the successors of the HMC40, HMC150 and the HPX170 will be like.

Wtf? 1080/60P? A PROGRESSIVE 60 Frames in 1080???? In a Consumer camera??????
Not only that, but did you read the press release? It says the thing takes 14-megapixel stills, and it has technology in it that can recognize when your subject smiles -- so you're rolling video, and when the person smiles, it automatically snaps a still.

Crazy.

So much for AVCHD being a "standard", and how Panasonic or whoever else cannot deviate from it.

I think someone said (was it PDR?) that Blu-ray actually does allow for 1080p50/1080p60, but this info is buried \ in some super-duper secret document that is not available to mere mortals; http://www.blu-raydisc.com does not mention these modes, but the most recent files there are dated by 2007.

As for 28 Mbit/s, it won't affect AVCHD discs mastering, as they are limited to 18 Mbit/s anyway, and current 24 Mbit/s videos have to be re-encoded if one wants to put them on a regular DVD. Mastering on BD or SD cards will not be a problem.

What is really surprising to me is that Panasonic offers higher bitrate on a consumer model, so much unlike the TM300/HMC40 cousins. Should we expect a twin pro model with 32 Mbit/s, the HMC50 or something?

Also, 1080p60 is great news, but what about native 24p and 30p?

It is interesting, will current Blu-ray players accept 1080p60.

One of those articles made it sound like the 28Mbps would only be for the 1080p60 mode, but AVCHD would still be limited to 17Mbps on the consumer cams.

I had that thought too, that when they do put 1080p60 capability in an AVCCAM camcorder, it probably will be at over 30Mbps.

hmm kinda phases hmc40 out pretty quickly?

Why not keep making the HMC40? ...and have an HMC50, with 1080p60 recording capability, a faster lens, two (SDXC) cards slots, etc., priced a few hundred higher.

Uh, never mind ...I like the idea of a sub $2k HMC50, with all the goodies, better.

Stuff like this makes me feel like the singularity is right around the corner. These cameras improve at such an insane rate. And the price doesn't seem to go up. I like this.

I remember 7 years ago when I paid around 1300 for the Canon Optura 200MC. Hahahaha.

well i guess for practical reasons, the hmc40 isnt that bad for court procedure or police recordings..

but the price should be sub 1500 if they do release a hmc50 or hmc40a with 1080p
