New camera announcements from Canon

It's interesting that they don't refer to it as the C500 anywhere in the article.

Between RED, BlackMagic, Kinefinity, and now Canon, does it seem like we're already blowing past 4K resolution? It stands to reason that the lifecycle of each resolution standard will be shorter than the one before it but at the rate we are moving, 4K may just be a blip on the radar.

Canon Inc. announced today that it is developing a Cinema EOS System 8K camera

This usually means "product on the shelf" is one or two years away, if everything goes well.

The Canon thing has a much better probability of actually happening, but if we take every crazy promise as equally valid, it's really behind RED:

Well, that chart, includes a Scarlet 2/3 (which never happened). So I'm not
quite sure what to make of it or how much of it to believe. I'm inclined to think
its kinda old, just judging by the fact that it includes the 2/3 Scarlet.....

36mp frames at 60p with 13 stops of DR and Canon colour, it'll be like moving D810 full resolution pictures, which when projected large is mind blowing immersive feel.

I think they chose to make a HDR lowlight C300II and a High resolution C500II.

That 120mp DSLR, Weird, since they just made the 5Ds. The place I can this is at 8-10K medium format rival for the highest-end niche photography market.

186 x 56 mm 261mp 28K,

what is this really,

a kindergarten's child drawing? =D

And they are putting a calculated 25p, why not 25000?

Up to the 8-9K FF model is cool but that last one just seems joke-ish. 2050 goal maybe.
Not a joke, Ebrahim. But good marketing. And reality on netflix in 2015, I'm watching a series made on 6K-5K native acquisition, larger than 4K. They actually did it! (we could only dare to dream with 2K, those days!) Proud of you, Jarred ;-)

Blackmagic has a 8K camera?

About the new Canon, 8K in a 35mm sensor? Will this be ISO400? 13 stops only just to get 8K? I take 14 stops in 4K please. Will also be rolling shutter or they would have announced global. Better be a very fast readout with 8K and rolling shutter. We will see.

Yes, that chart is old, and many of those cameras never appeared, and never will. Which is exactly my point: a "we are working on this" announcement means very little. Because talk is cheap, and because everybody is working on something.

Well true but I trust 100% that both these cameras are coming when it comes to Canon, they never promised a product and changed their mind, and they are promising here, it's an upside to being a major Japanese technology empire rather than a small company the way Red operated on the 2/3" scarlet days and how BM are operating today, consistency and reliability, but the downside is a feeling of isolation from the enormous manufacturer with no direct communication or a chance to actually do change their minds if they someday decide to make a 2/3'' fixed lens cinema camera :)

The Japanese manufacturers, as a matter of national pride and solidarity, will all be pushing hard to have functional 8K systems in time for the 2020 Olympics. NHK wants to see practical tests beginning in 2018:

I mean I remember seeing NHK's 8K camera and projection system showing actual 8K content produced with the system at NAB 2007... I'm not sure there is any reason to think any manufacturer is pushing much harder now to release an 8K camera except that incremental improvements over the past 8 years have naturally made their current hardware a bit closer. It's just as likely that it is still another 8 years away or perhaps 8K may be achieved by one manufacturer only to realize there is no market due to diminishing returns of resolution and missing infrastructure to support the 8K post/distribution after 8K capture. 4K still isn't even that common now. And am still one in the minority in that I have a 4K TV/monitor and shoot 4K projects but still rarely get to see anything distributed in 4K...

I think these announcements are Canon responsing to all the naysayers on the internet that keep going on and on about how they aren't innovating anymore.

They are not. Maybe they will at some point but resolution is not innovation in my book.

8k for 4k could be great. 4k capture with actual 4k resolution / high MTF and low aliasing.
This is what I thought when I read the announcement. A C500 II with 8K sensor for 4K internal capture and possible 8K off camera RAW. It would be a logical step up from the C300 II and inline with how Canon has been using sensors in their cinema cameras.
