That looks like a pretty good choice. It has a long zoom, 3 chips and can record to common avchd as well as higher bit rate xavc.
Not sure about "great" in low light. Probably more like good in low light.
The built-in LED would be helpful for times when you didn't have other lights with you. It can do 1080 60p which is useful for sports.

Anyone think this would be a good choice?

Sony HXR-NX5R NXCAM

Dunno - probably OK, but some people may be inclined to think 3X1/3" FHD cameras are a bit dated. The LED might be a bit of a gimmick, and do you need the SDI? That price range I'd also look at a Sony PXW-Z150.

I personally would buy a 4K camera at this point in time, even if you deliver in HD. But if you do not need more than 1080P for a while then HD should be fine.
The AG AC30 is soon to be released. If you can wait, I would see how it performs once it's in the public hands.

I have a friend that shoots HS football games with a camera similar, but not as new at the NX5R. 1/3 chips and 20X zoom seem to work well for him. However the trend now is more on bigger chips...but....for events like sports I do not think bigger chips are necessarily better.

The AG AC30 looks very good at that price. I would probably look closely at that one. We should start hearing more hands-on reviews now.
Another one I would look at is the AG UX90. It's a little more than the AC30, but at around $2000 seems to be a bargain. It has a shorter optical zoom, but probably would be sufficient. Plus it can shoot 4k and dual record. 4K would give you a lot of reframing room in post and extra zoom if needed. It can do UHD at 30p which would be useful.
The UX180 is a little above your original budget but it looks like a nice step up from the UX90 if you need the extra features and can shell out the extra money.

Sony has a lot of camcorders, a couple we mentioned already. Frankly I cannot remember them all. I do recall the NX3 looking like a pretty good value for a lower cost HD camcorder. I believe the NX5 has replaced it. That basic design has been used for several Sony cameras and seems to work pretty well. My friends old AX2000 has a similar design.

I'm not very familiar with the Canon handheld camcorders.
