New Blackmagic Camera July 16th?

If you can deal with 4K then 12K really doesn't feel any different. It seems like there’s not much of a “cost” to shoot 12K. On my current film I’m planning to switch between 12K and 8K because of the difference in RS times...

Its that efficient, huh? Do you find the same looks shooting in the lower raster sizes as you are with the 12k?

If you go the link

There’s some 8k and 4k in there.

I think between 12k and 8k I can’t tell. 4k is nice too but I notice the difference in resolution.

The codec is very good. Yeah if you shoot 12k 5:1 it’s 2.5TB an hour.

But the Q1 codec probably gets you closer to ArriRaw data rates at about 1TB an hour.

Q5 is really good too and it really gets down to like 256gb per hour depending on content. I shot a taking head on the 12k at Q5 and got 70 mins onto a 256gb card. And it looked great. I punched out tighter frames without much visual impact.

In other words, 8K for handheld or action? Is the 12K RS that slow?

All of the rolling shutter times for the Ursa Mini 12K are fairly low, but the 8K sensor readout (8.5 ms) is almost twice as fast as the 12K readout (15.5 ms), so there is an advantage to be had by switching to 8K, if needed:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...issue!&p=1986834151&viewfull=1#post1986834151

I'm guessing that the 8K mode does some kind of on-sensor pixel binning since it still provides a full sensor area view, but is faster than a full 12K readout with downsampling would be. But since 8K is still so much resolution, it may not end up mattering as much if the 8K readout is maybe not as sharp as a 12K -> 8K downsample would be. It's probably still plenty of resolution for most usage, and especially so if the final deliverable is 4K and will get the benefits of an 8K to 4K downsample in post.

Not at all slow compared to most cameras.

But at 8K it's twice as fast as in 12K mode.

I have a film I'm about to start shooting. 90% of the movie is coverage of a person running.

If I'm doing something that's long lens and hand held, action, then I now have the option to switch to 8K and have a very very fast RS time of 6.7ms. There aren't actually many RS cameras that are that fast.

If I'm doing a wideshot of a landscape then sure, I'll keep it in 12K. Even in 12K the RS time is 12.3ms in the mode I'm shooting.

The BRILLIANT thing here is that the field of view doesn't change. Only the resolution. I can drop to 8K and get an almost best in market RS time if I need to on a very active shot, or leave it in 12K and still get pretty up there RS times. I have the choice as the DP, I can change the setting inside of 5 seconds and be shooting and intermix on the same card.

8k @ 6.7ms vs 12k @ 12.3ms

Those are both very very impressive RS numbers.

Are you shooting a prototype still John or do production cameras exist yet?

I’m about to shoot a film with some production ones.

I have a production “sample” and I’m about to upload some footage i just shot of a sunset. It looks spectacular.

Shot for 2 hours, 12K @ Q3. 57 mins of footage shot which was about 220Gb. I cut that down to a 5 min cut in about 2 and half hours on my 2017 MacBook Pro LAPTOP. I beat the recharging of the single Anton Bauer battery I used.

It’s uploading now, If, I stay awake long enough I’ll post it tonight or else tomorrow.

Blackmagic RAW is just so good. It’s a great codec visually, but it’s so easy and painless to work with. It’s nuts I just did this in the space of 5-6 hours solo.

The 12K has no AF at the moment if that’s important to you.

JB

I know and it's one of the main reasons I'm not leaping at this camera. But... my last two cameras that I owned, C300mk2 and FS7, have pretty weak AF, in that they could not be relied on and had to be overridden often, so maybe...

2 hours shooting at 12K at Q3, making 227GB of files from 57 mins of footage. I cut this in 3 hours. With final render I did this in 6 hours from start to finish. Shooting solo and editing on my 2017 MacBook.

Also...

NO GRADE...this was done just using the default extended video out of camera. Obviously in BRAW there's a lot more DR there, but it was an interesting exercise to just go quick.

Sunsets at 2:00 and its getting dark after that, at 4 mins the colours get very interesting and nice.

Very nice John, thanks for sharing it. You can really see the wind buffeting you and the camera on some of those, shooting in the wind is challenging!
Shots look great, so much DR.

Yeah the wind was difficult. Especially on the 135mm shots and I only had a lightweight tripod.

John what ISO settings did you use on that footage?

Great footage and great use of Cliff Martinez! Excited to give this camera a try at some point.

I meant the 12k body.

Actually it may do the “simple” AF with the EF Mount, but I’d have to check. I haven’t shot with that mount.

All at ISO800

The pocket camera has single touch AF, would be nice if it's on the 12k. Concerning the beach footage, it looks really nice, however half way in there was noise and at 800 ISO makes me want to see an ISO/DR test, hopefully soon:laugh:
