New Audition Question(s)

Now that I've got my audition location issue resolved I have a couple new questions.

Do you generally provide the script to each person that is auditioning? The reason I ask that is I was thinking today, what if someone auditions, but when they finally see what the film is they are no longer interested. I'd hate to find that out after I say yes to someone and tell everyone else, thanks but it's filled.

Do you tell the potential talent to prepare something for the audition?

Do you use "sides"? And, if so, do you provide them before the audition date or use them for cold reads?

I think my biggest problem is that my script is very low on dialog, so it is hard to use that for the audition. I could have them act out parts of the script, but it would be solely their interpretation and would not incorporate whatever blocking I intend to use.

Thanks for any thoughts/ideas on any of this, it's all new to me.

Peace,
Larry

Couple of options (off the top of my head):

1) Have the actors prepare a monologue (I don't like this personally, because I feel you get a canned performance, but many people use it).

2) Write some additional dialogue scenes that will not be included in the movie (maybe something to do with the backstory). You could also just take what's non-verbal in your script and build some dialogue around it, again just for the audition.

Which ever you pick (there's probably other options as well), you have to decide if you're going to do cold reads (where the actors don't see the material until they arrive) or if you're going to distribute the sides prior to the auditions. I like to get the material to the people ahead of time just to see what kind of prep work they're capable of, but then I have plenty of adjustments in mind for the audition to see how they take direction.

Hope that helps (or at least makes sense).
