I have read a lot of discussions about shotgun mics on this group. None mention this new mic that was announced at NAB and is about to be released.

What are your thoughts of this mic vs the Rode NTG-2 as c camera mounted mic on the HVX200?

Description of AT875R
The Model AT875R is a wide-range, unidirectional condenser microphone specifically designed to provide the narrow acceptance angle desirable for long distance sound picking, broadcasting, and film / TV sound. It is equally suited for serious amateur recorder, high-quality sound reinforcement and other demanding sound ickup applications reqireing excellent sound rejection from the sides and rear. AT875R features a balanced, low impedance output and profesional-quaity cable connector.

Audio-Technica engineers have utilized the newest low-mass technology in the quest for superior performance. The permanent charge is now on the fixed back plate, rather than on the moving element. With the A-T "back-plate" construction, a gold-vaporixed diaphragm just 2 microns thick (about 0.000079") can be used. This reduces moving mass, improving frequency response and transient response while reducing distortion. The AT875R cab be posered from any external 11-52V DC phantom power supply.

The polar response of the Model AT875R has been designed to provide excellent on-axis sound pickup with maximum rejection of sounds originating at the sides or rear. This narrow acceptance angle is achieved with a combination of gradient and line interference principles. The result is useful particularly for stage pickups where high sensitivity must be maintained over longer than normal distances. The AT875R is also well in TV and film production, EMG, outdoor natur recording, and similar specialized applications.

The high sensitivity of the AT875R assures useful output under most circumstances, and it is designed to provide a distortion-free signal even in sound fileds as loud as 120 dB. Sounds approaching this intensity may require use of an attenuator between the microphone and electronics input to avoid overloading casued by excessive signal strength.

The Model AT875R is enclosed in a rugged housing with a low-reflectance matte finish. A foam windscreen is also available your A-T dealer.

The built-in 3 pin cable connector mates with a professional XLRF-type connector on the 0.5 meter, 3 conductor shielded cable provided.

A line of accessories designed to increase the utility of your AT875R is also available your A-T dealer.

Operation and Maintenance
Output is low impedance balanced. The balanced signal appears across Pins 2 and 3, while the ground (shield) connection is Pin 1. Output is phased so that positive accostic pressure produces positive voltage at Pin 2, in accordance with industry convention.

Architects and Engineers Specifications:
The microphone shall be a fixed-charge condenser with a unidirectional polar pattern and a frequency response of 100 to 20,000 hz. It shall be capable of operating from an external 11V to 52V DC phantom power source.

The microphone shall have a nominal opn-circuit output of -30dB at 1kHz/1 Pascal. It shall have an output impendance of 100ohms and output shall be balanced. The microphone shall accept a 127 dB SPL at 1 kHz while producing no greater than 3% T.H.D.

The microphone shall be 175 mm long and 21 mm in diameter. The weight shall be 80 grams. Finsih shall be low low-reflectance matte.

Well, the proof will be in the actual listening. But, your question about which is a better on camera mic is one that can be answered now - neither (as in none of the above). On camera mics can rarely get close enough to deliver quality audio.
