Been checking this one out, very compelling monitor from Atomos. Wish it had the Ninja V's Aluminium housing but oh well, polycarbonate can work too.
Mirrorless owners are going to be all over this. The LUT implementation and tool suite are cool and as the owner of the Ninja Blade, I know this screen will look superb. Well done Atomos!

This is great for those that have a camera with internal 10bit recording and are perfectly fine wit the quality that provides. Not only does the price make this much more attractive over a Ninja V but its lighter and a battery can last for 8+ hours. Very attractive for run&gun shooters or the wedding market where size, weight and runtime are critical. Its also those markets that are likely more than happy with the internal 10bit formats their cameras provide and would never see a quality advantage of ProRes.

Also makes a lot of sense as we continue to move away from broadcast standard formats like raw, anamorphic or larger than 4k resolutions like 5k and 6k. It is going to become a reality where recording internal is the only option since external recorders are tethered to broadcast specs. We still however need larger screens to see what we are shooting.

If I had a GH5, GH5s, Fuji XT3 or Pocket 4k I would be all over this.

Cool! Good timing from them.

Do we think this would be worth an upgrade over the SmallHD Focus? 720p monitor, 800 cd/m2, great UI.

It's a good idea. I really dig the Ninja V's screen. Focus peaking and 1080p on that little screen makes confirming focus a breeze, and it's JUST bright enough to get away with outdoors.

Seems to be made with p4k users in mind (specifically, for all those people who complained about not being able to tilt or swivel the screen). It's probably going to be a successful product.

Two things I wish was on the atomos Shinobi is a mounting option on the side and HDMI out. But all in all, I think this was a smart move from Atomos.

One other very important point I forgot. The dinky smaller sized option for the batteries get up to 1.5 hours. Thats pretty great for weight and balance when a large battery could add extra weight or throw the balance off to the back of the monitor. 1.5 hours is not bad at all for batteries that cost peanuts to buy a handful of. In standby mode that battery lasts for 3 hours. Which means if one moves around a lot and shuts off the monitor between locations they could probably get at least a 2 hour shoot with one dinky battery. Two batteries should cover a half day shoot with turning the monitor off when not shooting.

These batteries are so darn cheap it is nothing to charge and bring along ten of the things. Thats why I would likely always use the smallest batteries on this thing to keep the weight down and better overall balance.

I would buy two if I didn't already have a couple of SmallHD DP7s. I like the 7" size of the DP7s but they're only 720p and dim. It would be easier to nail focus with these bright 1080p Shinobis. Looks like I have my justification for an upgrade.

We need a monitor for our Fuji X-T3 and gimbal. The new Portkeys BM-5 looks to have a better feature set than the Shinobi but the BM-5 won't be available until June while the Shinobi and Shinobi SDI are both available now. We have a big shoot in the bright Florida sun mid-May and I am wondering if anyone has actually used a Shinobi in the nuclear daylight and if 1,000 nits is bright enough to actually be useful in this situation? The Portkeys is 2,000 nits while the Shinobi is half as bright at 1,000 nits. The Portkeys has an Aluminum body versus plastic on the Shinobi. The Portkeys has SDI and HDMI in at $399.00 while the Shinobi is $500.00 for the same inputs. But the Portkeys isn't available yet. Portkeys makes a cheaper, HDMI only model called the LH5HDR that is only $289.00 on Amazon but is 1,500 nits, which is still significantly brighter than the Shinobi but this monitor seems to the the same as an existing Ikan 5" monitor that gets pretty lousy reliability reviews.

I have no doubt that the software and menu implementation on the Shinobi will be better but the cost and brighter screens of the Portkeys models are tempting. Any other sub $500.00 5" monitors I should be considering that are at least 1,200 to 1,500 nits?

I almost got the Portkeys 7 inch at one point, the one that Ikan rebranded for themselves, but it was quite expensive for something with not enough reviews. This monitor does sound attractive, but the thing I'm worried about is software. The real advantage I feel that SmallHD and Atmos have is that their software get updated, and has a lot of interesting well thought out features. The Korean brand monitors tend to have more basic software, and they never update their firmware. One additional thing that makes the Atmos interesting to me is the ability to calibrate it with the standard i1 probe, it means you have a bit more ability to dial in a monitor whereas with the Portkeys you'll be stuck with whatever the factory calibration ends up being like. With the Atmos you're definitely paying the extra cost for the software development they do.

I'd rather get the Shinobi but 1,000 nits doesn't sound bright enough for the Florida sun that's what matters most for this shoot. Using a hood on my gimbal aint going to work out.
