new asian cinema, what do you reccommend?

I actually had the good fortune to see the North American premiere of Chan-Wook Park's new film, "I'm a Cyborg, but that's OK" at SXSW in Austin, TX in March 2007. It won't be released till December or so, depending on if they find a distributor...which I'm sure they will.

I love Chan-wook Park, but I was hesitant going into this film because I knew it was going to be different from his previous work. But I wasn't let down. It was great.

good to know since he is my favorite director aravance. I love his work and visuals. He's a true story teller.

would gladly go for tea Amber. Using the internet we sometime forget the real physical distance between all of us.
Btw the other day i saw in the mood for love from wong kar wai. I love the athmosphere so much. Wonder if you can still find such places in asia today. I once found an old chinsese hotel that really had this character in malaysia. I heard it was torned down to be replaced by a ugly modern hotel.
Wish they would release hd dvd or bluray versions of wong kar wai movies. So far hd format seems to have only american mainstream releases.....bummer.

Oh, and I don't think I've seen mentioned:

Shaolin Soccer. The imported HK version is superior to the American release, I've heard.

Yes, If you want a genious in comedy, you can't go wrong with Stephen Chow.

If you can get the "Journey to the East ", where he parodies the "Monkey King"Chinese legend, you'll have non stop laughter, as well as his trademark sarcasm.

Other fantastic Stephen Chow starring movie is "Thong Bak Fu"- Where he portrays a famous chinese scholar/artist/poet of chinese history. Hilarious comedy.

And, of course, his God of Gamblers spoof (two, in fact)

The spoof of the trademark Chow Yun Fat's slow motion entry in God of Gamblers is hilarious!

As you can see, I'm quite a fan... :)

And don't forget King of Cookery- In this movie, you see the beginning of the recent Stephen Chow- Comedy with social commentary and reflections on Hong-Kong society. Unmissable!

First time I saw a Stephen Chow movie (one of his older ones) I didn't know what to think. By the time I saw Shaolin Soccer I was a total fan. Now I can watch those old ones and find them funny. What's the term? Nonsense humor. Love it. :cheesy:
