new apple chicklet keyboard - grrr!

ok, i've spent a few days with the new apple keyboard. feel is pretty nice, but admittedly, i do miss the MEAT to the keys... after a decade or three, i was pretty well trained to the key travel. i may be picky or old fashioned, but i was cool with it. it's okay though. in the spirit of progress - i can adjust...

problems:

- must use software update just to use the VOLUME KEYS?!??!? - PHOQ! its just a damned KEYBOARD! why do i have to UD the OS for a keyboard?!?!?? ARRGGGH!!!... ok, BREATHE... i'm still in. just wonder why?
- using flash. an app RIFE with FN key shortcut functions - now i have to use an additional FN key modifier key to access them - command+FN+f8... WHAT, THREE KEYS to add a symbol now? am i using a laptop here?
- out of nowhere, suddenly my option(toggle), command, spacebar no longer works the magnify tool in illustrator...

GRRRRR - just tossed the new keyboard and plugged in the old one and THANKFULLY, life is back to where i left it!

another apple hardware effort. another significant blunder. IBM tried this with the PC junior about 17 years ago and they quickly came back to what worked...

imac round mouse - BAD IDEA
g4 qube - horribly BAD IDEA
mighty (clitoris) mouse - all over the place BAD IDEA
chicklet keyboard - who didnt see this one coming?

i have this theory that in about 3 more years apple will have abandoned the OS game and will just be in the media player/phone biz... where there isnt 60+ years of good design to screw up

the one thing that sucks about the mighty mouse is how the little ball(clitoris) gets gunked up and no longer works.

Ugh. It's the worst! I got so fed up cleaning it I replaced it with a 5 dollar click wheel mouse I found at the drug store, which works great!

Aw man, did you have to take a shot at the cube? lol! I bought mine used with whatever the complimentary LCD display was at the time and it's just been great (after a RAM and DVD drive upgrade). Sure i can't edit video on it, but it really worked out well for everything i needed for years and now it serves music via iTunes and does light-duty use for the kids. I guess i like the way it looks too. To each his own. It's all good.

Not to derail the discussion, but when you get all the components together, you can just see how flawed that whole design factor was (imo- like akajack said, to each his own.)

Apple keyboards and mice are just generally uncomfortable compared to most other peripheral makers. I <3 my Logitech MX518

Play fair now! The woofer and the tall stick speakers are third-party products (not Apple) and were not included with the Cube. Only the two smaller orb speakers were, and yes that the screen I was refering too. I have to agree it looks pretty bad with all that stuff there on that table.

DUDE! I understand you're frustration with the round mouse and while I have never used a G4 cube it's pretty much known as just bad (however I am getting this all from what I have read so...), but the Mighty Mouse? Really I've had mine for a little over a year now and I love it. The new keyboard looks awesome as well unlike the old ones you don't have to worry about all the gook that goes in between the keys as much.

the one thing that sucks about the mighty mouse is how the little ball(clitoris) gets gunked up and no longer works.

If you take a cloth to it and rub the ball around vigorously it should work again, if this fails somewhere online there is a step by step guide to opening (you have to break some plastic so it voids you're warranty) and cleaning. I followed the instructions and it worked.

Another dissatisfied mighty mouse user. mine always stops working. sometimes i just shake it, and believe it or not blowing on it seems to work. But why the heck should i have to do that?
Also, my space bar has been sticking. What should I do, crack the keyboard open?

I used to do this about every three days, and got fed up! If you have to clean something that often to keep it working it's just a bad design. There are better, cheaper mice out there.

YES, I layed my mighty mouse to rest about 6 months ago. VIVA la MX Revolution (by logitech)

In terms of the new keyboard. I own one and it's nice going between my macbook at school and my powermac at home. I like how you can type a lot faster on it as well. IT DOES mess up the whole function keys. Leopard already negated my XKeys functionality so no more folder launching at the press of a key. You can disable the apple functions (volume, brightness, etc) in the F1 to F12 range if needed. That may be a good solution for some. I just wish there were keyboard covers for the thing that had the FCP shortcuts. Seems like it will attract less dirt for sure. I havent made up m ymind on the thing yet.
