New Alexa's on the way.

Really? A 4K for $80K Alexa, that I could actually buy without waiting five months for it on backorder, sounds pretty okay to me...

I would think that a 4k Arri with the same DR and color handling as the Alexa would go over very well with the people who have the coin to use it.

F65 may or may not be viable at its quoted price. But an Alexa most definitely is.

I think what a lot of people don't understand about this professional gear is: it doesn't really matter what it costs. What matters is, how much can you make with it? If I bought an Alexa for $80,000 six months ago, and rented it out for $1,500/day an average of three days a week for the last six months... I would have pocketed $108,000 so far. And let's say I decided to sell the Alexa now, and can only get $50k for it on the used market. Did I take a $30k loss? Of course not. $80k went out, and $158,000 came in. I had the use of an Alexa for six months, and my net cost was zero, and in fact it PAID ME $78,000.

How can someone say an Alexa is "overpriced"? They could charge $20,000 more for it, and it would still be a screaming deal.

Now, by the same token, someone could have spent $350,000 for a Sony F35, rented it out for $2000/day for the first few weeks while people checked it out, then been burned badly when the Alexa came out and nobody wanted the F35 anymore, and lost a fortune. That would not be good.

So -- the F65's price tag is only relevant in perspective with what kind of income it will bring in. If it'll bring in $300,000 in rentals in the first six months, then it certainly wouldn't be overpriced at $250,000! And if nobody wants it and everybody demands an Epic or something else instead, then the F65 would be overpriced at $10,000. So whether it's a good deal or not is solely related to: how much rental work will it bring in? (or, alternatively, if you're someone who would be paying the $1500/day for an Alexa, for a month or so, then the F65 might make more sense to buy outright).

I think it will be interesting to see how the rental market reacts when both the F65 and EPIC are available at rental houses.

We shall see :P

.

your argument is good and all, but i have to call you on something. it is two-day week, not three-day...for some time now with the alexa. plus the 1,500 has gone down to 1,250 in many places. still, it keeps working all the time. this next 3 month rental i think i will have recovered my investment...except i have been spending the money in other things, so i still have two years to go on the lease.
