New Alexa Mini

If you're a producer doing the budget on a big Hollwood movie, the difference between this Alexa mini and some go pros won't even wiggle the spread sheet on your budget. They'll probably spend more on craft services.

Interesting when you separate it from the idea of a crashcam and think of it as a competitor to the F55 and the like.

I haven't gone through the specs and the limitations but on first blush it could be anything but a GoPro replacement.

I have seen some behind the scenes where the director just puts cameras every where unobtrusively and lets' the action roll, capturing it from every angle for something like a big action scene. These would be great for something like that.

Exactly. And the extra cost you spend on the camera body will probably be made up in workflow of the camera department & in post production. And unless a DP really likes changing looks between cameras, I'm guessing they'll be happy that they can match their A cams to the B cams to their C cams that much easier.

Considering that Arri cameras cleaned up in the Oscar nominations for cinematography, I'm guessing Arri won't have a hard time selling these to DPs to use on their future project(s).

I was at BVE 2015 in London today, stopped by the ARRI stand and chatted for a bit with one of the ARRI reps. Here's what I learned about the Alexa Mini:

- uses the Amira viewfinder (MVF-1), not the alexa one
- Will ship at 16:9 only upon release, 4:3 to come later
- 4:3 ARRIRAW 2.8K recording on board on CFast 2.0 cards is coming as a paid update in Fall - price around 3K Euro
- Will ship without a viewfinder, price 32,000 Euros.
- Orders start in March, delivery in May.
- The Alexa MINI was created to respond to the increased usage of Non-ARRI cameras on drones and specialised hand-held gimbals shots where people use mostly C300's, RED epics, etc. ARRI wanted to compliment Multi Alexa shoots by giving DP's a smaller version of the ALEXA they can stick on a multirotor or hand held gimbal and have a uniform workflow.
- It was a requested form factor since the ALexa Classic, but until recently ARRI saw this segment viable
- Can be operated autonomously - just add the above fiewfinder (or monitor via SDI), Cfast 2.0 card and a V-lock or equivalent power supply and you're off.
- Today was the first public showing of the Alexa mini (there were 2 at the show) and the response from the show both DP's and resellers has been very positive.
- ARRI expect to sell boat loads of these to rental houses and production companies.

Going back to BVE tomorrow, and will see if I can get more info from them. Anyone want to know anything specific that has not already been announced or discussed - post here, will do my best to get an answer from them tomorrow.

oh, and yes a Canon rep did stop by and take a look at the Alexa MINI - his look says it all... (not joking the dude's from Canon; was on his badge, which is out of shot).. his look was priceless :)

Interesting to see what this price point means for C500 v2 ?

P.S Luv this camera, I suspect this is a big shake up for everyone else product lines & price points.

The body cost is an illusion, it's missing the inclusion of all the Arri peripherals you'll need to get the thing running.

Looks great, I can certainly think of a few ways I'd put it to use that get a little complex/sketchy with a full-size Alexa.
