New $350.00 Single Slot P2 Reader?!?! Finally!

It might be that old USB and Mac thing too. I heard way back that for some mysterious reason, the USB 1.1 standard was not well implemented in Macs, perhaps that carried over to USB 2.0? I know that when I do disk cloning with my Macs, USB is also MUCH slower than FW 400 or 800.

Hmm...for about the same MSRP as this new Panny device, I could just take Barry's advice and buy a cheap, new PC with a PCMCIA slot. I'll have to think this through. You PC people are lucky when it comes to P2, Mac users kind of got the short end of the stick all around. We pay the price for being Mac users with P2.

Hi Barry,

If this Panna reader gave 2gig/min, i'd expect most would be more than happy with that for the bucks involved, it certainly will fill a big hole in the P2 food chain.

That it does. And it hopefully fills it now and forever, and we should never again hear anyone griping about P2 being "obsolete" -- as long as a USB port exists in the world, P2 will be fully usable. It's usable in PCI Express, usable in ExpressCard, usable from the cameras, and now usable from a simple USB reader.

FWIW, used P2 PCS060 drives are selling below $500. Gives you a card reader with FW interface and remote power. It's like having a card reader with 60Gigs of memory attached. Makes you wonder how this would have worked out if Panny had priced these within reach in the beginning. All the discontent and kludgy stuff might never have happened.

I see these as an indispensable item; like a spare battery. No matter what I use to offload I want one of these in my laptop or camera bag as a backup. How cool to have something small and light that can connect to any computer, I cannot imagine not bringing one everywhere the camera goes.

Looks like it will be fantastic... I guess my 5 Card reader will be worth nothing now...

$350 is a bargin...

Cheers

Sold.

only issue i can see with it is if you have an old 15" mbp you dont have 2 USB ports on the same side.

meh. Use an expresscard USB adapter.

once again. Sold.

Yeah, I was wondering abt that. For older MBPs I guess we'll have to use separate USB cables rather than the dual USB cable supplied by Panasonic. Not a big deal I suppose unless I'm missing something here. Are there any issues with that?

Should be no issues... I have a Lacie Drive that has 2 x usb to power.. and no issues plugging it in on each side of a 1.67 Powerbook...

Cheers

That is awesome news! I hope Panny'll make the two usb cables long enough for me to connect 'em on each side of my MacBookPro without having to resort to a usb cable extension or anything like that.

I highly doubt that the supplied cable will reach from one side of a MBP to another. Especially if its a proprietary panasonic cable.

Lets hope i eat my words.

This is fantastic news and I am so glad I didnt buy another computer just to offload. A note on the price... it wont be 350 it will be cheaper, you need to remember thats MSP not street price. Most likely be round 280-300.

I have no problems with the power situation, I have the new macbook pro and was waiting for this to come out since I mostly offload right from the camera I didnt have a problem yet. But now that more shoots are coming around again and I dont have the older mbp I am thrilled this came out just in time!

Now... who will have them in stock and when!???

Like many others have said, this is a no-brainer purchse for me. Good to know Panasonic IS listening and doing some market research. Now if only they'd make their website more user-friendly...

Have you ever tried this? If I recall, I think I clocked in about 45 minutes per 8GB card using the P2 Store as an external reader, it was much faster to dump to the P2 Store's drive, but then you had to double that time to transfer that file to an external drive. Incredibly slow. Definitely works but impractical.
