New 2010 Reel - almost locked... FEEDBACK welcome!!!

Damn nice reel there Tim, very slick work.

I might ask one question at 00:33 there is a one second shot of lights. It doesn't seem to quite fit with the rest of the edits, seems either too short, or doesn't belong. Just a thought.

I think it sort of works as a transitional element, but when I see that shot I want it to focus on something.

Amazing work.

If I was being picky I would say that the water droplets on the mid-bottom of the windshield are distracting. Just at the closing.

I think the way it finishes the reel is too good to pass up though.

Again, that's being really picky. Fantastic work!

Wish you lived near me. :)

really nice work but i think the reel is too long. 5min is a long time when you are looking at several reels for a project. i would suggest picking the best of the best of your shots and cutting it way down. seeing shoots repeat (windshield) doesn't help it. my 2c. hope that helps.

In a demo, you want your best stuff first. I'd say cut out or move the first 35 seconds worth. Timelapse stuff is not impressive, everybody is doing that nowadays with their DSLRs - and anybody can do it. What makes yours special?

I saw some good stuff...so put it where most people will see it!

+2. Obviously a lot of work has gone into this, but in my opinion, a shorter version is needed. I got to about minute 2 before losing a bit of interest. That said, joe schmo producer isn't going to make it as far as me. Keep the long version for those who want to see more, send a short version to those who just need to see your reel.

Great stuff though, Timur

I'm going to go with shorter version but I probably was the only one who didn't care for the music, while it worked for the quick time lapse, I don't think it gave me a good dramatic feel for the overall project.

Start with a dynamic shot and build us into the demo.

I love the juxtaposition of the dynamic city shots with the peaceful one shots.

Length is also an issue for me. I was told (could be wrong) 1:00-1:30 tops. Hard hitting, focused. Get your best work in front of the viewer as soon as possible. Hard to do, when each and every shot is one of your "babies".

thanks for the feed back guys...

I get alot of people saying make it shorter... and alot saying No DONT make it shorter, but cut it slower to show off the shots...

I guess im gonna hve to split it up, into a short fast flashy reel, a musicvideo reel, and a narritive reel. a bit of somethign for everyone...

But, let me tell you, I saw some beautiful work there. You have a tough job, trying to pare it down, if you choose to go that route.

Timmy - you did have a lot of great shots, what you didn't have was a single story to show me.

You go from music video to drama to city landscapes back to guitar back to... Tell me a single story that is SO YOU.

That's really why we felt the time.

A lot of those shots are similar enough that I don't think it would be too hard to cut. Use that as your criteria.

Timur:

Great photography. Music is a non-sequiter though, cool song, but does not really compliment your photography IMHO.

I agree, too long. As a producer/DP, I will second the comment that :60 to :90 is ideal, give them a taste of the beer, not a whoie keg. Old show biz axiom is leave 'em wanting more, right? Like wanting enough to call you or your agent to at least request more. Then you can whip out your 5 minute reel or even a complete show/feature and give it to them. A trailer is a teaser, not the five course meal.

Hate to say it but you might want to consider hiring a good editor or two. I am a firm believer in NOT cutting your own reel, few DPs are good enough editors to do so. I am doing the same as we speak, I have four reels to cut and I will have three different editors cutting them, then two composers doing the music scoring for each. To me, everyone just does a montage with a bunch of random music behind it. Might show you are a decent DP but it does not show your exceptional taste in collaborating with talented editors and composers.

I hire DPs periodically and I give a reel :30 to grab me. If not, I move to the next. That is reality. Everything else is just deluding yourself. I can tell within :15 if I want to pursue this person enough to look at more or call them to discuss a gig. I also agree with the time lapse. While your time lapse looks good, I have shot some of the same locations and have footage that looks similar. Don't get me wrong, it looks good but not exceptional (neither does mine). So cut or chop it and put your most exceptional shots right up front.
