it all depends on your budget. you can always get by on some flood lights. but if you can aford it buy an arri lighting kit with 2 650W and a 300W. you can do any thing with those 3 lights.

Wow...

Ok, here's a basic rule of thumb.

To properly light a person, budget $500. Two people $750, three people $1k. To light a living room with people in it, $2k. Every time the room size doubles increase your budget by a factor of 4.

Ok, now that said, there are MANY ways to light on the cheap. The problem is that it takes quite a bit of experience and fiddling to use crappy and/or cheap gear to good effect. I'm currently working on a short film right now, and you would not BELIEVE what I've had to do to light a bedroom, a bathroom, and living, and a hallway. So far I've had to light a grocery store, a house, a fake hospital waiting room, some outdoor scenes, and I have a convenience store coming up this weekend.

Don't kid yourself. Lighting things properly take skill, and understanding. And you are NOT going to get there with some floodlights, or a couple Arri lights. God knows I wish I had a couple 10k's for this weekend. Lighting night exteriors is always a BEAR...
