Never trust what you hear

I did a recording with my DVX the other day and I thought all went well and sounded well. However when I got to the editing room I noticed a prob. My audio level sound like it was pealking the entire recording (But it was not) That is a issue for another day however I need to get this tape eddied ASAP but the audio is horable. Does anyone know of a good filter inFCP that will fix the peaking audio.

Restoring clipped audio is about as easy as restoring over exposed footage. You can probably smooth out the clipped portions, alas, missing information is missing information.

I am not missing any audio I can hear everything in the mix but it is just clipping as you said. Is there a filter in FCP 4 that will ajust that and what would be the work proces to do that. Thank you so much for your help.. -Nebee to FCP

No. If you're actually clipping (evident by a horrible distortion sound) you're screwed. You may be able to modify the waveform a bit to try and compensate for it, but you'll never make it good, and you wont be able to do it with a simple FCP filter. Either reshoot or ADR it...

There is an audio tool in FCP I cant remember the exact name but it searches through your sequence and finds the audio peaks. You may be able to adjust the audio right in the timeline. You may also want to try but I am not sure if it will work is a software called SOUND SOAP. Thats good for removing unwanted sounds in your recording but I am not sure if it will help in an audio peaking situation. Now if you adjust your levels in the timeline/or mixer, and the levels are still peaking or still sounds distorted....then your up the creek with no paddle sorry to say.

Well if he's clipping during playback, fine. But if he tracked it too hot, it's not going to help. SoundSoap is a great program, but it wont help with this, neither will normalizing the sound in FCP.

soundsoap is pretty good, but it won't help with the peaking. I think the filter in fcp is compression limiter?
