Neumann KMR81i For Indoor Use

I know the general consensus is not to use shotguns inside because of reflections. But, I listened to Dan's samples and to my ears the Neumann KMR81i was great indoors.

I love the isolation it achieves! Can someone who uses this microphone chime in?

Does this microphone preform well indoors?

Do you have problems with rear reflections?

I have an 81i (bought it about 25 years ago).

It is, indeed, an excellent mic.

But, like *any* mic. that has a directivity other than cardioid, will have some rear pick-up.

You can see exactly what happens by going to the 81i on the Neumann website HERE and clicking on "Technical Data". Then click on the magnifying glass to get the interactive view - by clicking on each frequency you can see exactly what the microphone is doing at different frequencies.

And, yes, the KMR 81i is a lot better than miost other gun mics off-axis.

I hope this helps.

It's my go-to mic. LOVE LOVE LOVE the smooth sound and low noise. It's a bit tricky booming actors with some distance between them, but I use it indoors, outside, underground, on the ocean, on the camera, or wherever I am... it goes.

I used it for recording auditions in an echoey room the other day. The heater fans were on and one actor was so quiet I couldn't even hear him, but when I played the tape back, was surprised to hear that I could understand every word, and that was with the mic on the camera from 15' away.
