Networking Question

We have a home network with about 6 or 7 computers on it. A bunch of PCs and 2 macs. We mostly use the network for internet access and to share printers. But now I want to access some video files on my G5's external drives and bring them over to my PC. I turned file sharing on and searched for other computers from my PC (running W2K), but came up empty.

I know I can burn them to disk, but I really don't want to. Ideally my wife and I want to transfer files at will, so any help would be appreciated.

I'm a novice at this but was just tinkering with this the other day to try to transfer some p2 footy (which was way too slow).

If you are wanting to do this via wireless router (or probably through a hub too) the easiest way without having to install software would be to use the "Shared Folder" in my computer. You can put files in there, or right click folders that you want to share and tell them to be shared folders. That is what I did and it worked fine. This was on a machine running XP Media Center, and a machine running Vista and it worked. Don't know if it will work across W2k and a mac or whatnot, but thought I would throw it out there.

Jason

Yes I second the shared folder, I've got a simple wireless router, and always chuck GBytes back and forth, its pretty fast.

Not sure about going from Mac to PC though.

Use iChat/AIM to transfer them. Networking PCs and Macs can be tricky - I have always had much trouble doing it.

I kinda got it working, although I'm not sure exactly what I did. I accessed the G5 from the PC after setting it up as a network. But not all the files show up. Then when I transferred the Mpeg-2 and Aiff files I exported through compressor, their names got changed in the process. That wasn't a big deal though, since they were the only files on the desktop.

But then premiere wouldn't recognize the aiff file, only the mgeg-2. So now I re-exported it as a QT file and am trying it that way.

But jeez it's alot slower than I thought. 25 min to transfer a 1.2 gig file through a wired router.

Well getting stuff off the mac to the PC went fine, except for how long it took.

But then I went and changed all of the appropriate folders to "share" on the PC, but I don't know how to find them from my mac.

You need to go on the mac and do this:

Go > Connect to server > Type in "smb://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX"

XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX is your PC IP's Address, You will then get a popup showing you the shares that are available.

AS for the speed you would need to get a 10/100/1000 wired switch, i am able to edit over the network with AVI's on the PC with no problems.

If you're going from a PC to PC or PC to Mac, you can probably use a firewire connection, which should give you a fast connection. The only thing that would really be faster is gigabit.

I have a 10/100/1000 wired switch, so now I really think I've done something bass-ackwards. But I'm not even sure what I did...All I know is that is estimating over an hour to move a 1.8 gig .mov file.

Where do I find the PCs IP Addy? I have found it by accident a few times, but now I can't seem to locate it.

To get your IP go to control panel > Network Connections > double click your LAN connection > click on support
The general tab there will show you if you are runing in Gigabit or not, its possible your PC only has a 10/100 LAN Port.

When i d-click on my LAN connection I don't get the option of a support tab. The general tab does say the speed is 10.0Mbps
