Network Editing

1) I currently have a laptop with a 1.6gHz C2D in it. I use it as my main editing machine running footage off a USB-2 HDD. I have a tower with three more hard drives in it that I don't really use too much because it is a 2.8 P4. Now I will upgrade it later this year (maybe) but I was wondering: if I network these two computers together, can I edit 24p DV in Vegas 7 without a huge performance hit? I really just want to use the tower as a server.

I do everything from straight-cut edits to complex spots to longer films but it is all most all 24p DV.

Network rendering is only for rendering. You can use the towers hard drives over a network, but that is more complicated and will likely be slower.

2- The laptop by itself shouldnt have problems with 24p DV.

I know about network rendering. I just wanted to network the computers to take advantage of the hard drive space in the tower. Sounds like you're saying this connection would make it too slow to edit off of.

I don't think it would be too slow (assuming your laptop is wired into the router, not wireless).

Try it and see if it works... e.g. cross dissolve 2 clips. (Or see how many video streams you can get going at once.)

Nope, I'm wired. I will definitely try it when I have a chance. The computers happen to be 100 miles apart right now so it will have to wait until next week. I'll report back for the sake of anyone else with this question. Thanks Glenn.

We edit cineform with rock solid playback through a gigabit switch... Our main workstation has 2tb+ raid (0+1) and our second workstation edits off those drives too. Set vegas to not close media when minimized to avoid it stalling when alt-tabbing.
