Hey all, you can disregard this if you all know, but I figured I'd post.
Some of you may know i've been working for the last month on a large documentary on karate black belt testing and had about 17 hours of footage to go through. While I didn't have to capture all of it, I did end up with about 12 hours I wanted to pick through, edit, speed up, take shots of.
I only had about an 80 gig drive in my machine and ran out of space pretty quick, including my other projects.
I have 13 PCS, with about 1.5 terrabytes of total space. I thought, well I could either go get another hard drive, for 150$ for a big one, or invest in gigabit. A netgear gigabit adapter is 26$ at bestbuy. the switch was about 50.
I got 2 gigabit cards (one of my mobos has built in gigabit, making 3 total) and put on the switch.
I copied about 43 gigs of video to a network drive in under 20 minutes, and have been able to capture real time from DV to the network drive with 0 dropped frames. Its quite possible it captures locally then writes to network drive (it takes a little longer building the peaks in vegas) but regardless, I've noticed no slow down.
Also, working on the timeline has been seamless. So if any of you are having space problems and have multiple PCS, this might be something to think about, as it has been FANTASTIC for me.
Again, disregard this if its useless, but its my experience
