nesting question

I've done this before and I know its probably something simple.

I have a feature film, and I have a master timelime (sequence) which is made up of sequences from other projects, that represent each scene in the movie. So for every scene or section of scenes it has its own project and own sequences, which I've then imported into this master project, and then put on the timeline as a nested sequence. When I double click on said nested sequence, it opens in a new tab.

Now, I've gotten some vfx renders back that need to be added to the master timeline, and since they were created in AE, the time code matches the scene timecode they were pulled from. So, What I did was.. open the master project, with the nested scene sequences and double clicked that scene, which opens up in a new tab in THAT same project.. and layed the new clip over the top of the old one. Saved the project.. but the new addition is not showing up in the master sequence, its still the old version. Do I have to render it first or do I have to physically open that specific project and change it there for it to update in my master?
